Proper 17" tire size is either 215/45R17 or 225/40R17 or 225/45R17, depending on the width of the tire. Since that's as large as you can run without serious fender surgery, you're really wasting the extra width of your wheels. 7 or 7.5" wide is actually better. But, 8" will be fine. If you already have them run them. But if you're considering acquiring them, then just stick to 17x7.5".

Rubbing issues will depend on what tire you use. What tires are you considering?

You would probably have some rubbing with 225/45s unless you have significant camber. 215/45R17 will be just fine though, and that's the best size for the car anyway.

It depends on the specific tire you use. They all have different physical widths, even though they say 225/45R17.

It depends on whether or not you're willing to roll your rear inner fender lip a little bit. If you are, I'd say go with 215/45ZR17 Potenza S-03s. The Dunlop FM901s may even fit in 225/45R17, but I'm almost 100% sure they would be rub-free in 215/45R17, and again that's the best size for the car.

I have a GC and I will be installing 17x7.5 rota subzeros with 22545R17. Mine is lowered and the guy at the wheel shop said it wont rub. I am having doubts on this since 225/45 is a bit bigger. but Im hoping for the best. told him it should be 215/45 or 225/40. well see

I have Rota downshifts (same size and offset) on my 02 WRX with 225/45/17 so3's and the car is lowerd 1.2" in the rear with 1 degree of -camber and they rub when I am pushing hard in corners. Im prety sure there is more room in the fender of a WRX than a GC8 so if I were you I would take Ban's advise and go with a 215.

It depends entirely on what specific tire you have. Some 215s will rub (see S-03s, Kumho MX, Falken Azenis Sport, etc.) but some tires will fit in 235, like Yokohama AVS ES100s. It just depends what you have. If you go to TireRack.com you can look up the exact width of individual tires in your size.

I just installed my wheels last week. Rubs like heck. I rolled the fenders and it only rubs on the front when you take the corners hard. Go with 215/45R17 or 225/40/R17.
