What should I get?

Something that will be good for the rainy winter in Bay Area and something that will be ok to take up to snowy Tahoe?

235/40/17

Thanks!

I know nothing about M+S or all season tires.

OMG!

Check Turanza LS-Z at TireRack. That tire has better ratings than SO-3's all around and it kicks *** in the snow. That is my next tire for my Legacy.

Turanza is a great tire - but be careful on the reviews. The S-03 will outperform it easily in cornering and dry traction. You've got to consider the type of tires the people writing reviews are used to driving. Use them to compare tires within a group, but don't jump groups. The Bridgeston Dueler A/T Revo gets cornering ratings as high as both of them... (case in point)

Don't get me wrong, the Turanza is awesome. But it's not for the race track. It's a "quiet giant" with small cornering concessions to favor smooth ride.
