Dexter - Winter Tire Question
Dex,
What is your take on the Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 as compared to the M2 and Blizzak WS-50. I am concerned about three things in this order:
1. Traction in snow
2. Dry handling
3. Treadwear
Based on what I can tell the the M3's have limited customer responses, but what is there shows both excellent dry and snow capabilities. There is no treadwear ratings in the "Specs" area.
I've had Blizzaks before and love the traction but could only seem to get about one, maybe 1.5 seasons out of them. The Blizzaks along with a couple of bags of sand made my Miata feel like a AWD car. I could get through anything with them. Had Arctic Alpins, traction sucked, but lasted two seasons.
Have never tried the M2's, seem pretty good, but all the numbers for the M3's seem better, and it is cheaper ($92 vs. $99).
Just wanted to get your (highly regarded) opinion.

I consider the M2 and the M3 interchangeable, six of one - half dozen of the other. It has a slightly different tread design for higher speed resistance to hydroplaning on standing water. It was originally released only in hard-to-find sizes but is gradually replacing the M2 in 16, 17, and 18" sizes. The M2 is available in 14, 15, 16, and 17" sizes.
I use the M2s on stock wheels for 3-4 mos. per year (1200mi/month) and am expecting 3 seasons out of them. My wagon was an absolute demon in the snow last year - never felt so sure-footed in the most adverse of conditions.
Bottom line, in M2 vs. M3, I'd go either with whatever one is less expensive and/or in-stock in your size.
