Damaged Tire Replacement - Limitations?
I know that in most cases when your tires have survived their full life-span that you must replace all at once on an AWD car.
I have an 02 WRX w/ Yokohama A550 (Sears specialty tire) and unfutunately damaged one of the tires. The rest of the tires are in very good shape but have about 15,000 miles on them with even wear and lots of tread remaining.
Is there a certain limitation (i.e. tread depth) that you absolutely can't replace only one or two of the tires?
I wouldn't mind replacing 2 @ $100+ each but replacing all four when there is so much life left on them seems insane.
I am very concerned about damage to my powertrain & drivetrain as well.
Thank you for your input!

theres no "definite" that I know of. As a general rule, it should be less than 1/32 of an inch or so of wear. I doubt theres that little wear on 15k miles, but i don't know. You could have new ones shaved to match, but few places offer this (tirerack does) and since they're sears specialty tires, I don't know. Good luck

Did you buy 'Road Hazard'? Did you buy the H or V rated tires? (I ask b/c the H rated tires carry a 50,000 milage warranty & the V rated tires have a 30k mi warr.) I would appeal to the manager or his/her assistant & ask for some sort of adjustment on the old tires. (For instance, ask for a 50% 'Customer Satisfaction' adjustment on the 3 other tires since you put 15k on a 30k tire.)
If you have 'Road Hazard' then you could also puncture the 3 other tires in the sidewall rendering them unservicable. But that would be tantamount to insurance fraud...of sorts...not that I would ever recommend such a thing...

I would recommend replacing the one bad tire, and getting the new tire
shaved to match the others. This is the most economical, and the most
practical. It isn't really that big of a deal.
There has to be some shops that can do this in your area, maybe the local
SCCA racers or miata spec racers in your area can tell you where. Is there
a local chapter? (internet search) You can probably ask them over the web.
If all else fails, you might be able to ship a tire to someplace like Tirerack,
and have it shaved and returned.

I recall someone saying that you will not do any damage if the tires are within 1/4" od of eachother.. otherwise we'd grenade our cars if we forgot to rotate the tires!

If you run tires under inflated, they'll wear badly right? so I wouldn't underinflate it, I don't know, maybe you do esoteric? but I believe that the OD should be less than a percent or two. So what you can do really depends on how your tires look. If they seem hella new, you can probably get away with only 1, but if they are worn to like 50%, it probably wouldn't be such a good idea (unless you get it shaved or somthin) Oh yea and I like Esoterics second idea neway, good luck

It is NEVER a good idea to under inflate a tire (ask FoMoCo). A underinflated tire will wear the inner & outer shoulder areas of a tire. The car will also 'wallow'. (FYI I can tell when I have a low tire b/c the car doesn't handle the way it normally does.)
IIRC the spec was within 1/4in of circumference, not diameter. That is a huge difference.
BTW, what did they say @ Sears?

...kinda sounds like underinflation to me...

Why go through the hassle? Get one new tire, put it in the position that wears the fastest (left front on my wrx), and put 2 or so psi less in it. Air pressure affects your overall diameter...

Underinflation is not having enough air in a tire. Most people in here run between 40-34psi, 2-4 psi more in the front. This is well over the recommended inflation pressure from Subaru, but within spec on the tires. If you have 2psi less in one tire, that's not underinflated.
Sorry to confuse you. Air pressure ultimately determines the rolling circumference.

Yea, sounded like underinflating it, I guess I'm kinda crazy. I just got that idea from what you said that the diameter would be substancially different, but it doesn't seem like changing the overinflation by so little would make a difference. But as far as tire presure goes, stock recommendations, at least on my car is 36/32, so I definently agree that a difference of 4 psi while overinflated, or at least, stock and up, you won't have any problems. Good Luck

It's really never a good idea to just replace 1 tire on an AWD car. Maybe you can sell the 3 that you have? And just buy a whole new set of tires. I don't know, but I probably wouldnt buy just one new one.
