3-piece rims vs. one-piece rims?
Hello all,
Just curious as to what the difference is between a 3-piece wheel versus a regular alloy wheel (i.e. something like OZ Super's?). What purpose would it serve - Different feel? Weight? Structural integrity? All of the above?
Any info. is always appreciated...

I think that it is integrety/strength that people go for with 3 piece. Personally, I had Racing Hart CP-035's (1 piece), and they were a STRONG RIM...the lightest rim on the market, and VERY STRONG becaused they were FORGED.
3 piece rims are heavier, and expensive, but if you want that exotic tuner look...they are an option.
My Racing Harts are being sold in the morning...and I want to cry. You don't understand how light they are. I have read that they are 12 LBS, but they feel closer to 10!
Just amazing...I may buy another set in the future.

cool...thanks.
I just wonder what the integrity of a three piece rim would be under NYC type conditions. I mean, for "show" I am sure they are a nice compliment to a car, as long as the design works, but drivability...well, I am wondering what that would be like.
Well, thanks for the info. I will attempt to find some more.

modular
3-peice rims offer the option of replacing various parts when racing to help lighten cost. If you bend the wall or break a spoke you can rebuild the wheel instead of buying a whole new one. A properly maintained 3-peice wheel should be just as strong as a one-piece of the same quality. For pothole-riddled city streets, the best bet is to go with a strong (albeit a little heavy) cast wheel in a 17" max. That way you have some tire to cushion it, and if you do damage it, it's not too expensive to replace!

Ocelot...
seems like a valid situation. If in the even that someone has tried something like this on an impreza/legacy/subaru, I would definately like to hear their experience.
As for 3 piece rims, well, maybe someday I will be fortunate enough to own a set, for summer use. "we be big pimpin'."
Anyway, thanks for the feedback,

Multi-Piece Wheel Integrity
Hi All:
I will put in my input and see if most of you agree.
Most all racer type people recognize the following two names in Racing Wheels and they are O.Z. Racing and of course BBS Racing Wheels.
For the record, these two companys are two of the most widely used companys of wheels that are being used today and in the past of true racing vehicles.
Theyre record speaks for it's self, if you visit theyre web site's you will see and find out theyre racing heritage.
Also Team-Dynamics Racing is right in theyre with them with the Pro-Am And SCCA racing lines.
I think that the best looking wheels in the world (HRE) which are forged 3-piece alloy wheels should also be taken into consideration , not only for their Beauty but for theyre use of Light weight use of aerospace grade materials and the manufacturing tolerances that they build them with such as custom widths, weights and larger centers for a more dramatic look.
Any way..I could go - on- and- on, but I wont : Hope I didnt bore anyone and I hope that I at least added some insight to the main question..
Thank You all who are reading this...

unless you have a lot of cash to burn, you should consider
one piece for even dressup. its just not worth it imo to pay
such prices for a 3piece just for show. the benefit of having
a 3piece is in case you bent the rim, you can replace just the
rim.
check out Giovanna and some other places that specializes in
dressup wheels. if you want a performance wheel, i highly
recommend checking out the manufacturing process (forged,
semi-forged, etc) then look at the weights. unless you are
racing, a 22lbs wheel will not make much difference vs a
12.7lbs wheel on the streets. (my personal experience).
my mille miglia dressup wheels vs my ssr comp in 17x7.5.
the only difference is slightly better response on acceleration
and braking, but unless you have a sport sus system, you
probably cant tell that either.

1 other reason for 3 piece
If you need an odd offset/width combination a 3 piece wheel is tons cheaper than getting a one-off cast or forged wheel. The rim halves usually come in 1/2" (or so) width increments and the center sections usually have a bit of meat that can be left on or milled off to fine tune the offset.
Kinda nice if you're looking for 9 or 10 inch wide wheels with a 5x100 bolt pattern and large offset. Check out Kinesis http://www.kinesismotorsport.com wheels too ... really sweet.
They are heavier than 1 piece forged wheels, though which is why you don't see 3 piece wheels on race cars anymore. BTW, BBS Champ Car wheels are 14 inches wide and light as a feather. I never weighed one, but I'd say around 20lbs. a piece with the tire. Wicked strong too ... 1550lb car with a few thousand pounds of downforce and a few g's puts a lot of load on a wheel.
