I'm not too sure which is better for the WRX in particular, but I guess it all depends on what you're going for.
18's will likely fill the wheel well better but keep in mind that the larger the wheel the more rotational mass. That means your car will have to work harder to spin those wheels.

17" wheels look and work great. I had 18s and the car looked strange at factory ride height - the illusion of a big fender gap was very real. If you get 18s, plan on lowering the car about an inch to get a nice look.

i have:
volk te-37's
ssr sp1's
and racing hart cpo-35's
all 18's.
my car is on its stock suspension not lowered.
with 225/40/18 tires.
and my car looks lowered with all 3 sets of those rims on.
but then again i'm more of what my car looks.
but the car will perform better on 17's and yes your car will look like a monster truck with 17's at stock hight.
i know 5 guys with that problem.

depends on what you wanna do with your car... 18's (in general) do not perform the best in the dirt, if you are going to take your car in teh dirt, steer clear of the 18's... unless you are going to drop a LOT of dough on them and get a real nice high quality (ie WRC spec) set of wheels...
