there is no chemical reaction, the mentos only help release the carbon dioxide in the coke, kind of like if you sprinkle a little salt in your beer, but they seem to do it in an almost violent fashion.

no, it's not a chemical reaction at all, it s a physical phase transition. it's a process called nucleation, where very small gas bubbles are formed from a liquid when some sort of stimulant is applied, like a pressure drop (opening a fresh coke bottle or a beer) or by introducing nucleation sites which trigger the release of the bubbles (like the tiny pores on a mentos surface).

so the mentos act as a catalyst for the phase transition?
(I feel like this has turned into a conversation from Star Trek)

right, the nucleation sites on the mentos surface trigger the release of carbon dioxide gas from the coke liquid in a faster than normal amount of time. the same thing would happen if you opened the coke bottle under a vaccum. sorry for being such a dork about this, but I had to geek out on this one. It's my duty as a chemist to teach the facts, and save the world!

Those guys look like they where having a lot of fun doing that little show. Reminds me of the belagio in vegas. Must have taken a lot of time to get that whole routine down. Pretty impressive.
