Brazilian Jujitsu vs. Judo, the start of more than a half century of beef that's been rekindled by matches like Yoshida Hidehiko vs. Royce Gracie. Kimura won.

IIRC, Helio lost the match and from there took BJJ in a new direction (that's why practitioners of his style are somewhat different from the other Gracie and Machado cousins). This wound was reopened a few years ago when Helio's son Royce lost an MMA match against Yoshida Hidehiko, a gold medalist Judo-ka and now MMA fighter.

The Japanese invented Judo/Jiu Jitsu. IMO, there's no way the Brazilians are gonna beat them at their own game. Japanese: been practicing Jiu Jitsu for 1200 years. Brazilians: 90 years. =/

Very true, but I do think that the Brazilians' focus on ground fighting is truly impressive. Seems like Japanese styles of Jujutsu/Judo focus more on clinching and throwing. Like I say for a lot of classical (Japanese) styles though, evolution would help! And many would argue that BJJ is an evolution of the classical style. Just thinking out loud

Not all Brazilians are BJJ fighters though. Wanderlei Silva actually lists his style as Muay Thai, not BJJ, as do his Chute Boxe gym mates Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Murillo "Ninja" Rua. Don't forget that Nogueira and Brazilian Top Team used to list their style as luta livre. Plus there are like 90 Gracies, not just 9 (lol). Just being ****, don't mind me
I think the issue is that in Japan, Judo and Jujutsu are just now reemerging in the MMA world. If you look at most Japanese fighters, they're still practicing styles like shooto or wrestling, and it's been partially because of Yoshida that classical Japanese arts are coming back into vogue in MMA in Japan. Consider all the guys from Yoshida Dojo (Judo): Nakamura Kazuhiro, Takimoto Makoto, Yoshida himself, they're all pretty new to the MMA game, as are other Japanese judoists like Akiyama et al or karateka like Chonan Ryo. Also, there aren't too many jujutsuka from Japan anymore aside from maybe Sudo Genki. If you think twice about it, most Japanese fighters had abandoned the classical styles when they started doing MMA and as such there are many who list their styles as wrestling, shooto, or sougou kakutougi. In the meantime, Brazilians were honing their own style of jujutsu so I'd have to say that BJJ is more updated and complete, but one can't ignore its Japanese roots both in terms of longterm history and its birth in Brazil thanks to "Comte Coma" Maeda, a Japanese emmigrant. Hence, this goes back to my post about Helio evolving the sport. My 2 cents, everyone bored or asleep yet?
