What IS tri-state?

Which state is the third state? Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and ... ____?

On this side of the state, when somebody says tri-state, they are referring to Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio

.

Just curious.

Actually, NY/NJ are 1, then CT and PA are 2 and 3.

I think it goes like this:
All of NY, NJ, and PA. Sometimes a little bit of Connecticut and Delaware (kind of like the letter Y is sometimes a vowel).

In reality it’s more like a half dozen pockets; mostly from the greater NYC area, the greater Philadelphia area, Pittsburgh, and Rochester.

Lol, so nobody really knows? Perhaps we should be the east coast region. But wait, Pittsburgh really isn't on the coast. Maybe we're tri-state because nobody can come up with a suitable name!

Where I am at, there are 4 states that you can drink in, driving the speed limit, in one night.

North Delaware (home), (Southern)NJ, PA (philly area), and MD (Eastern shore).
