I used to live in Yonkers, NY.... right next to the Bronx.... Close to the City. I now live in Texas. Yonkers is a better neighborhood than the Bronx.... Although I suggest having a garage or renting a garage for your car!

Also remember: even if one commutes from an outer boro, or from Long Island or Westchester (where I live) there is the cost of the daily train/subway/bus rides to get where you want to go. I live in northern Westchester, and my mortgage payment includes house, yard, a 25'x100' driveway and a 1-car garage. I have had 10 cars parked on my driveway. Total cost: under $2K per month. For a single person working on Wall Street, this is NOT the place to be. When I did work in Manhattan (for 20 years) I lived in The Bronx and had off-street parking. All of the posts about cars in Manhattan are to be believed! Start networking with folks on your new job and try to get a share before committing to an apartment. It's a jungle down there!

I just came from SoCal and the weather is going to difficult to leave although I'm sure you won't miss the surfer bros.
Since you work in Wall Street the best option with your car is to live in Brooklyn, in neighborhoods like Williamsburg or Brooklyn Heights. Commuting on the train will be about a 1/2 or so, not so bad.
You can find parking garages with much cheaper rates than Manhattan; almost half if you're in the know.
And for an apartment the best thing to do is through a roomate finder site (NY Times or Village Voice.com); just find a graduate student or something similar. After some time you'll be able to find something better if that doesn't work out; but at least you're not tied to a lease!
It does take a little work to get settled in Manhattan, but it isn't impossible. Good Luck!

Stay away from Hobeken or Williamsburg or even suburbs unless you are saving huge amounts monthly. If you are moving to the city you may as well live in the city. If the difference is a hundred bucks or so, go for manhattan. Try to find a place to crash for a little while with a friend and scope out the place. Don't just rent something right away. It probabally will cost you hundreds and you may not like it.

Either way, the tri-state area is an exciting but expensive place to live in.

they are many areas in the bronx that are good , take example riverdale , i have a huge one bedroom with a parking spot for 930 a month , no alt side street parking , plus its in a private house , it literally 3 min from the west side which takes you directly into the city , if I were you also contemplate in buying a co-op you can find one around riverdale with doorman and all for around 120K but can go up to millions , its very exclusice . just something to think about
good luck
