Why would you declare 9/11 as "National Day of Service"? What about all those people who died? National Day of Service = 9/12 and beyond. 9/11 should be a remembrance day?
Stupid name, insult to the dead.

However, I do not see how this can at all be interpreted as an insult to the dead. A day dedicated to helping your fellow country men? How does that insult those who died on that day?
Stupid holday? Yes. Insulting? No.

A national day of service sounds pretty mandatory to me..
What are they going to make our kids pick up litter or serve homeless or something?

We could do this everyday... lol but people choose not to. Kind of like going to church, people choose to do that too, again I think all the church hours and donated tax-free money should be spent into our own communities instead, we would see a huge difference.
Real life > church.

i disagree, I feel that its a great way to honor those lost to a tragedy by actually inspiring someone to DO something. A tradition with service days is to have a moment of silence, therefore those lost on 9/11/2001 will definitely be in mind during that time, and the rest of the day.
If you feel any pressure to go out and do something in service to your community. Good. thats the point. (it's not mandatory, thats ridiculous) if you don't have the chance or opportunity on that day, then keep it in mind and get involved in some other way or time during the year.
I myself am a proud AmeriCorps member and have a outspoken desire of giving back anytime possible. I will be doing community garden projects tomorrow. And i am very sure that the tragedy, deaths, and consequent series of events of 9/11/01 will be on my mind. not to mention, still strongly present now. and for a good while.

Does Labor Day or Canadian Boxing Day sound mandatory too?
