What gets me about the story is how i had to search for it as it's not on the front page.
It's significant sports news seeing how Iraq was oppressed in the sports world for 12+ years.
If you goto yahoo.com and search the 'soccer section' in Reuters, AP, AFP and CP you'll still see stories from the 10th and 11th but nothing on Iraq's symbolic victory.
Wouldn't want anyone to get the impression that things are hopeful for the country, now would we?

Jesse Owens made Adolf Hitler look foolish during the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, thus turning a sporting event into a major political message.
But the fact Iraq has beat a good futbol team after being bogged down by and evil dictator for a decade has zero message as it's "just sports"?

Good news out of Iraq = good for Bush = supress news
Bad news in Iraq = Bad for Bush = Blow out of proportion
I hope Iraq takes the gold in every event they're participating in.

That's great stuff. I hope they do well too! Wouldn't that be something if they medaled? There would be news then for sure. No way to suppress that! That's excellent! Isn't the New Yorker a primarily liberal newspaper too? I could be wrong on that one though...
Great find Salty!
EDIT: Just looked on MSNBC's Frontpage and it is now a little blurb on the nightly news section. Maybe mainstream media will pick it up after all.
