I removed the dust shields on the rear of my car for my (bolt-on) GT-B rear upgrade with my bare hands. Just twisted the thin metal until the welds gave up. I personally think their removal is a non-issue in terms of durability.
The rear backing plate/dust shield combo seems to confuse a lot of people. Just as a refresher, the center section of the stock backing plate is made of heavy stamped steel and is bolted to the knuckle and has integral 5.75" spaced mounting holes for use with any of the sliding rear calipers. The backing plate for the STi 2pots is similar but has 4.5" mounting hole spacing farther out from the center and a larger sheet metal dust shield spot welded at the perimeter.

Again, I have reservations about this setup. I think even the "H6" upgrade would be preferable to this kit.

I think that if you do any upgrade you should do it right. I mean that if you should use the correct dust shield, mounting points, etc. Because when things are designed they are deisgned for a reason. I feel that if you remove the dust shield portion of the rear bracket, you increase the chance of getting something like a stone caught between the pads and rotor. Even though you might think that removing that piece will help out airflow, it probably does almost nothing but provide a bit more protection.

hmmm
I appreciate your caution ImprezaRSDriver. Do you also shower in a bathing suit?
In my case (BG Legacy) and in the case of any USDM WRX or GC Impreza owner, there is not in existence any rear backing plates for "correctly" mounting the 290mm rear rotors with the sliding single pot rear calipers on our cars. Unless you are willing to sacrifice your rear ABS pickups for the "correct" 290mm dust shield. The BE/H Legacys from which these parts would be sourced use entirely different rear ABS pickups.
The removal of the rear dust shields I still feel is a non-issue.
