Rear sway bar or springs

1st priority is good rubber. I don't know if you are on stock tires or not. Springs alone are very hard to find- if not impossable for our cars(except coilovers). A rear sway bar will tighten things up quite a bit. I have a whiteline adjustable, and it was the best mod I've done for the money. Be sure to get the endlinks too. Be carefull on the stiffest setting.....Hello oversteer!

I would agree with nitrohuffer, first would be to improve the rubber. I have an adjustable rear swaybar as well, and it does induce some oversteer, even on the middle setting. Springs are definitely difficult to come by for our cars. Coilovers would probably be the best bet for improving our suspensions at the moment, yet they are pricey IMO.

Well, I have the WRX wheels with the stock WRX tires on them. Should I still upgrade the rubber first or not worry about it for a while. It's winter here and I wouldn't upgrade the tires until about March anyways. My first mods are for the suspension.
The general consensus is that the rear sway bar is a very good mod for the money then? How much will that set me back?

IIRC, the stock WRX tires are the same that we have on the BE's (well, for the GT anyway) which are the famed re92's. Yes, you would probably still want to upgrade your rubber to improve the effect of the swaybar.
I think the swaybar is a good investment, and depending which vendor you go through it should run around $150 plus shipping, then another ~$40 if you go for the bushings. A vendor which I know has the bars currently is Teagues auto (www.teaguesauto.com) infact he told me he had several of them in stock when I ordered my front bushings. Very nice guy.

Well, I did replace the Legacy L steel wheels and hubcaps to the WRX wheels and tires. The tires, if I upgrade them, will have to wait until the spring not only because it's winter, but also because I need income (I'm a highschool student BTW).

Nope, thier the same. I had my stock tires for a while, sold them. I just bought a set of wrx rims/tires and they are exactly the same.

Swaybar for sure!
Which is more effective? I'd say a 20mm rear swaybar. We put one on each of our 2002 GT wagons. The Whiteline BSR12XZ adjustable set to 20mm. I got mine for Christmas! I love it! I can take Chewbacca (my Titanium GT) fast around corners with no sway or body roll. It's like changing the longer wheelbase into a tighter much more tossable smaller wheelbase on a sports car. Really it is! I love it so much, I am going for struts next on this page http://cobbtuning.com/legacy/ Check it out, you will find everything you need here. Tires are important too like the pthers say. We both have Michelin Pilot Sport XGT H4's and find them superior in every way to the stock rubber.

Soft springs large swaybars = love
Hello again,
I have been pondering your question and I found the answer (or one sources opinion of the answer) in Sports Compact Car Magazine. They reviewed the top 10 cars under $20,000. Anyway, the Mazda Protege' was hands down the best handling car. The Protege' was designed using large swaybars (20mm front and back) and soft springs. The magazine stated that the combination of soft springs and large swaybars is pure geniuos, creating a perfect handling car that even rivals the BMW M5.
I feel this way about Chewie after getting her a large 20mm rear swaybar. I hope this helped.

BH Rear Sway Bar
The rear sway bar on our Legacy L wagon, which has 16" GT wheels and Bridgestone 730s on it, is 13 mm according to my caliper measurement.
We don't really need an adjustable rear sway bar and I don't want to dial in too much bar and have the car oversteering so I'd like to find an 18 mm rear bar. Any of you know if the Outback bar which I understand is 18 mm will fit.
If not do you know where we can find an 18 mm bar aftermarket bar? Thanks for any help you can give us.
