My caliper painting project
#3
continued
After I got off the caliper and shoe bracket I removed the dirt, grime and most of the old paint with a wire brush and a wire brush for the drill. (this piture was taken before the removal of the paint)

I then used high temp primer and painted the whole bracket. I covered up the pot on the caliper and primed the main parts that would show when installed. After waiting a day I then painted the parts with high temp engine block paint.

After waiting another day for the paint to dry I put the parts back on the car.
Whenever I do a brake job or take apart the brakes for whatever I clean off the carrier bolts. You don't want these binding up, because these are how the calipers move to compress the pads. So I usually wipe off all the old grease. Make sure the bolts are smooth, if they aren't smooth take a fine grit paper and remove any roughness. (roughness usually ends up being dried old grease or pieces of the rubber boot that fall into the hole with the movement of the pin) I then dip the bolt in some high temp grease. And then it all goes back on the car.

And after three days of doing all this, one of my calipers ended up being frozen. I called all the local auto parts stores and Autozone had them the cheapest. But, not only were they the cheapest but they also came powdercoated.
----So if you were thinking about painting your factory calipers, don't. It isn't worth the time.----
Instead, go down to the "zone" pick whether you want yellow or red powdercoat, wait one day (not three days like this job takes) and put your new calipers back on. That'll take two days, and so much less trouble. I hope this write up sheds some light on the process of caliper painting and you're able to take something from it. Enjoy

I recently did my calipers with G2 caliper paint and it turned out really nice. It's cheap and it's not difficult to do with a little patience. The whole job took about 2-hours to paint all four calipers and 24-hours to let cure. The SUBARU logos are high temp stickers I got from ebay... I'd recommend painting them. Easy mod and serves to protect calipers from the weather.

Bracket came with the caliper also powder-coated. But only my fronts are from the zone, my rear calipers are re-painted. Honestly the price is worth it for the zone calipers, just because it saves so much time and the powder-coat will last longer than any paint you'll throw on them. The cost was 99$ for both front with a 100$ core charge. I think that's a deal.

Thanks, I bought them from a company in MA that does their own metal work. They are basic Brembo rotors, then just drilled and slotted, and zinc plated. But as you can see the zinc plating does zilch for rust protection. They also made my ss lines. And before you ask, I can't for the life of me remember the company's name.
