Having an inverted shock has nothing to do with jumping.
To be able to withstand harsh landings, your car must have enough shock travel and stocks that will withstand the impact.
Also, your whole car much be able to handle it. Underbody armour is a must.
A safety harness and a helmet is highly recommended, to prevent cracking your head on the cage or the b pillar.
Generally, I would neither do it nor recommend it.

I've heard its all about the inverted struts because of the harsh landings
seriously though, i think it has more to do with the fact that aftermarket struts are generally stronger than stock and some of them are inverted.
in addition in Imprezer's list of reccomended equipment i'd add stronger wheels and tires, taking anything that could possibly become a projectile out of your car, and having a very good story for your insurance company already made up if you decide to launch your Subaru.

Oh, and off the ground is off the ground when it comes to sticking landings- if you don't track perfectly straight in the air, or have inhuman reflexes, it's perfectly possible to get tossed right off the road before you can react. Or, you can stick it like Bo Duke- you just won't know until it happens.

i recommend against anything major, maybe a few inches off the ground across an intersection or over a railroad track is ok, but nothing close to a foot. with that said...
a set up that can take MAJOR punishment is the set-up I currently have. KYB AGX's w/ Custom Rated Eibach Springs. The KYB's can take the impact of the uprated springs much better, and the BIG thing you cannot forget is the springs. Typically a 250 spring rate will not allow the car to bottom out much at all. I'm running 250/200, in comparison to DMS's set-up that 275/225, its a lil softer, but still capable... this is for bearable daily driving, but it can be stiffer for competition like 300/350. My friend ran 250/250 in his GC8 and jumped with fury. You've probably seen the flying silver GC8 somewhere before.
OR you can just get a nice rally suspension, I recommend TEIN HG's, PROFLEX, or even DMS 50/60's (but I am told they arent very reliable).

I dont know about jumping, but I know the inverted coil overs can generally handle more lateral forces than the non-inverted because of the was the shocks & housings sit. There's an article about it in SCC mag.
