DMS 40mm Gold coilovers
Are the DMS 40mm Golds any good? Is anyone using them? Are they stiff enough for track use? I don't really care if they're harsh on the street, I'm looking for a good track coilover setup. Any input is appreciated on these. Thanks.

Hey PimpWagon,
I've had mine for about a year ... I've done about 8 HPDE during that time. I love 'em. I got stiffer spring rates on mine and have been pretty satisfied with their performance (wife is not so impressed ... "I liked your car when it was mussier". (Oh well, can't make everyone happy).

Steve you are the first person I've heard who has been satisfied with them after an extended period. I do know that shiv wasn't impressed with them on your car. He mentioned he didn't like them much when taking my car out for a drive. I assume it was your car he was talking about when he was talking about another customer who had them.
I have been quite dissatisfied with mine and DMS service leaves a LOT to be desired.
Typical problems with the 40s have been stiction problems between the strut and the bushing which has requried servicing, often within the first 10k miles of the struts life. The problem is most notable in noise and bouncy ride, but several who autocross seriously noted delayed suspension response under heavy cornering.
DMS has said that there has been updates of the struts, I have gotten different answers from different DMS representatives as to exactly what has been changed. Some have said significant design changes and some have insisted no design changes "except xyz"
Anyway, there have been several dissatisfied DMS gold users here and on the 'other' club. They may very well have cleaned everything up with the new design, but they also left a lot of customers out a lot of money with unacceptable perfromance from struts and facing either having to write off the investment or send them back for a service that would total ~$600 after all is said and done.
do some searching on nasioc.com and make your own judgements. My opinion is no surprise, but you should form your own.
They will handle a track well enough, but if track perfromance is your primary concern, most will actually do well in that arena. I've heard Tien has much better support.

Here's a link and a quote:

40mm DMS Gold is NOT for rallying! It is a performance street suspension meant to lower the car about an inch or so. They are not designed to be run at stock (or higher) ride height or to be used for rallying. Occaisional rallycrosses or track events are fine.
Probably you had an earlier set of 40mm Golds. There were some "stiction" issues associated with those but the 40mm line has been reworked to solve those problems and there are upgrades for the earlier sets.

This was the first time I have ever heard anyone from DMS admit to problems with the DMS40 PUBLICLY. When I sent in my sets to fix the stiction issue, I got them back 2 months later and was told that there was nothing wrong. Well, I still had the problem and recently I just found out that there is a kit now to fix the problem. Great!!! Now all I have to do is uninstall them again, send them in again, fix them again, and reinstall them again, and get alignment again. OH, and pay for it all over again.
I guess when I last complained about it, I was told that I should expect defects for the retail price that I paid for the dms40...Also, that I'm responsible for its development and testing. Take those statements for what it's worth.
My advice for you future owners of dms40 is this. It is a good product should DMS resolves all the issues with the DMS40 (stiction being one of the major ones). Make sure you know your return/exchange policy. The stiction problem may not rear its ugly self right away so beware of time limit of the return/exchange policy.
And when you're happy with your new 3rd gen dms40, please give thanks to those of us that developed and tested the 40's for you. DMS certainly didn't. They did however gave me a nod and a wink and offer dms50 at a price. I declined. Going elsewhere.
Happy Motoring...BlueMax
