car shakes on braking
hello People. i have WRX 2002.
I have a stock brakes and my car shakes big time when I break from high speed. and the more I break the more shaking I have.
What can be the problem? Some people say it is rotors. Can you sugjest something to me I dont know what to do
And another question.
What do you think I need to do about my breaks? Upgrade to what? just rotors? Or whole kit to a bigger ones? What about rear? Anyone had any experience with this? thanx for answering!

I think it's time for you to have your rotors turned and replace your break pads. I've had that same problem with my previous car. Sometimes though, they might not be able to turn your rotors anymore if they have been turned before. Then, your only option is to buy new rotors.
Good luck finding a good break shop.

i've had cars do this in the past, and it's always been warped rotors. if you brake really hard, or drag the brakes and get them hot the rotors can/will warp. like a previous poster mentioned, you can probably get the rotors machined back into tolerance.
upgrading to rotors that dissipate heat better than the stockers would help prevent the problem in the future.

Sounds like that either the rotors have overheated and warped the rotors, which can be fixed by remachining, however due to the reduced thickness, they will warp much easier next time.
The other thing to look at is wheel bearings, in Australia, after 40,000km, the bearings lose their preload, and give the same sypmtoms as warped rotors.
Brake pads are also a problem, depending which ones you are using, pads with excessive resins in them, can leave a deposit on the rotor surface, and also giving symptoms of warped rotors.
120 grit emery paper on the disc to remove the resin deposits should work without machining the discs.
Lastly, our DBA 4000 rotors are developed for street and light track applications, using a good pad.
Hope my input helps, let me know how it all works out.
Cheers.

I have an 04 WRX. I have the same problem and its really annoying me. I think the main cause of it is too much breaking at high speed . .say 100mph then pressing the break.
I'm gonna try to change the brake pads first and if the damn thing still shakes, I 'm changing the rotors.
Is there any other way to fix my rotor instead of replacing it.
I only have 10k in my car and the rotor still looks pretty good and thick.
If that's not possible then subaru should do something about the warping problem. I thought rotor was supposed to last a long time for your car. this is bull.

ATTN: Administrator - Any input to resolve the Warped Rotors??
I just got a WRX 2004 last month and I have the same problem too, a tire technician told me it sounds like the warped rotors, he suggest I should go to the dealer and ask them to go for a test drive then see. My question is how can this happened to a fairly new car? As we see from the posts, I am not alone. I never had this problem on my previous Impreza RS2.5 but now I am doubt if the Subaru QC team has ever looked into this issue and get it improved!
Thanks for any comment you may have.

It could be rotors. It could also be wheel bearings like others said. Or, sometimes, if the steering rack bushing wears out, same thing happens.
I would definetely start with rotors. Get them turned or get some aftermarket ones. Also, getting new pads might be a good idea too.
It is less likely that it is the wheel bearings, as you would have other symptoms besides the brake-shaking.
Steering rack bushing is a possibility, but on a car that new it is not likely, unless you drive like Vin Diseil.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comment, I guess the rotors could have been damaged when the car was used for a demo. The car has already been driven about 70 km before I purchased. I am gonna check with my dealer on Monday.

I have an 02 and had a similar, but not as servere problem while braking. My bugeye has 38,000 miles on it, so I figured it was time to change the brakes. The rotors were still in good shape, slight scoring not servere, so I replaced the brakes with Axxis Ulimates (I know, I know, but they were cheap). After the bedding in process, my car no longers pulses while braking. I think that the stock brakes can cause this problem. This might be an unusual case though, don't know.
btw, I still had 30-40% of the lining left on the stockers. Which absolutely amazed me.

Me the same for my 2002 WRX.This is something that happens regular to all cars here for xample when rains, if your driving for a long periods of time the rotor get hot...too hot and when the water touch the rotor the rotors become weak and deform

People, how many times do I have to say that rotors almost NEVER WARP before people understand that rotors almost NEVER WARP?

I will agree with Tim. My car was doing the same thing at high speeds, and definately notice more with more people or weight in the car. I got the rotors turned and it alievated the problem only temorarilayrrrayly (sp?). When I switched brake pads (Cobalts) it didn't take long for the problem to dissappear. Now I don't have that problem anymore.
cheers
