Brembo Rear Rotors? OEM Pads ONLY?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi ALL !
My rear rotors and pads needed replacing. I'de like to do them myself. I found the steps here easy to follow, so, for the first time I'de like to save a few bucks and do them myself! I have an 1997 GT Legacy Wgn. 2.5 DOHC.
So the questions is.................I've heard for years that ONLY use OEM Subee pads!! The logic being.....they don't sqeak!!! IS this TRUE? Or rumor!? If rumor....what are a decent set of pads for regular driving??
Rotors..............I've seen them on Ebay. Brembo's? Don't they make the OEM rotors for Subee? Any good???? If not, what to get???
Many, Many Thanks......SubeeTed

I don't know the answer about the suby pads being the only ones that don't squeak but my thought would be that it is rumor. Of course any dealership will tell you that you should have factory suby pads and everything else but that is because they make more money that way. As far as the brembos i would say that if you put on those rotors you should probably replace the calipers as well but i am not sure and would take the advice of someone who know for sure. Good luck and let us know if you find out any more info

You'll probably only have the option to use rear Subaru pads for your car, because aftermarket rear pads for stock brakes are uncommon. The rears don't do an awful lot of work anyways, so i wouldn't be too concerned about it. The squeaking issue is a bunch of crap. I've used Axxis and Cobb pads on my Legacies with no problems or anything more than an occasional noise.

Rock Auto carries several lines of brakes for our cars. I just ordered Wagner Silvers front and back, as well as new rear rotors for $128 to my door...well...someone's front door--UPS can't read.

Well, for pads, let me provide some insight.
I changed out the rears with AXXIS Metal Masters about 1000 miles before I changed out the fronts.
During that time everything sounded and felt great.
As soon as I changed the front OEM pads out with the AXXIS', I noted a lot more noise, squeeling, etc.
I thought my rotors might be toast, so I took it to BrakeMasters for a free brake check. Everything checked out fine, so it means the pads are just too harsh.
If I had to do it over again, I'd go OEM pads, at least in the front. They may set into place after some more miles and become less noisy, so I'll keep you updated.

I had Axxis pads on mine, with drilled brembo rotors. It was dished horribly when i purchased it, so the update to the WRX-sized rotors not only gave me more surface area, but a slightly better selection of pads up front. I'll probably go to the Cobb Street pads again.
Another nice trade-off was the near elimination of dust front from the front brakes. It would coat the wheels AND any part of the car that it could adhere to, including that little rub strip on the side skirt. It's still very clean now, after more than a month, with OE WRX pads.

Very easy swap, especially since the 00-04 GT and 02-05 WRX share the same calipers.
I did the same thing on my old 93 Touring Wagon, and wrote it up a bit here:

16s are all but mandatory. There might be some 15s out there that'ld work, but not many.
