Question Brakes for '02 WRX

I'm sure this has been covered in previous posts.. but I scanned through alot and couldn't find enough info.

I want to upgrade/replace my front and rear brakes in my '02 WRX.

I would like rotors that are vented/slotted and/or drilled (basically for looks and more stopping power). I would also like some sort of coating on the rotors to reduce the rusting.

I would also like new calipers (basically for looks), stainless steel braided hoses and a recommendation on pads.

The real problem is that I want to keep the stock 16" rims because I have new tires on them.

Most of the brake kits i've seen make this impossible. Perhaps my own kit could be assembled from different components and/or vendors?

Note: I do alot of highway driving.

You can get the 22b 4-pot brakes. There's a special clip you can get (I think from subaruparts.com) for them that will make them work with a WRX. Those brakes clear the 98-01 RS wheels and should clear the stock WRX wheels as well.

You might PM BAN SUVS, he's a mod on this site. He just sold some 4pots to a guy about two weeks ago and he might know how to help you get some more.

Lightbulb Subaru 4-pot calipers

Says on subaru parts.com that you need 17" Rims to fit those 4-pot calipers. I thought I read on another site that you need 16" Rims though.

Does anyone know if they offer anything for the rear calipers?

Have any other comments?

I wannat get some nicer front and rears and I like the way those 4 pots look

You have a few options here.

Rotora (TWR Racing) has a BBK kit that fits under the the 16 inch wrx wheels. While I did not buy this kit, I'd probably choose this one given the restriction is for the wrx stock wheels. With my woes and hassles with the iON Performance AP Racing Kit, I would have certainly went for this one.

iON Performance sells an AP Racing BBK kit that fits under the 16 inch wrx wheels. I would not recommend this kit. Too many hassles (and shims) and their support was not very helpful at all. I posted up my response in the reviews sections of this website.

AEM has a kit for the wrx. Im not sure if its a full kit however. I think their like black powder coated rotors. They look good, but they are also thinner. (not very wide)

Wilwood sellls calipers that fit under the 16x6.5 wheels of the MY02 WRX. However, you would still use the same rotors as the rex. Im sure you can find rotors that will fit under the Wilwood calipers. Tommy of MPJ Performance told me once during a meet, that he put them on. He didnt like it. I never tried these so I can not post my experiences with them.

Added this info:

A long time ago, there was an advertisement of a Endless (Spoon) Mini 6 pot caliper that would fit under the stock wrx wheels. I never followed up on this because Spoon gear is notoriously expensive. I dunno if this is true or not, but if you can find this info and post it up it be great.

Hope this helps.

The STi 4 Pot brakes WILL NOT fit under stock WRX wheels. However, they will fit under 98-01 RS wheels. The WRX wheels are 16x6.5 and the RS wheels are 16x7.

Rotora is NOT the same as TWR. I believe TWR has a kit that will fit under the stock WRX wheels, however I am not familiar with a Rotora kit that will. StopTech does not make a BBK that will fit under 16" wheels, so if you have done the research and you MUST have different calipers, there isn't a whole lot we can do for you.

I will warn you to beware of companies selling kits for the WRX that consist of pre-existing calipers having been adapted to the WRX without consideration for correct piston sizing. "Bigger is better" logic does NOT always apply to brakes.

I will also warn you to steer clear of kits that only increase the size of your front rotors without making changes to the rest of your brake system. This will dramatically increase front bias and will decrease braking performance. Companies who sell these products are clearly not performance-based.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Doesn't Stop-Tech sell a big brake kit for the WRX that only replaces the front brakes without considering the back brakes?

Endless Big Brake Kit. They have a 4-pot mini...but i dont know if they would fit your rims or not.

If you are interested or want more info, call Auto RnD @ 408-635-0000. They specialize in suspension + brakes. And they are the US distributor or all Endless/Zeal products. They can tell you everything you want to know.

good luck.

I believe that prodrive also has a BBK that will fit under the stock WRX wheel or under the Factory RS wheels that are a .5" wider.

where does one get such a spacer? Also do you know if the H6 rotor conversion will work with the factory wheels?

I thought I'd update here as well. Modified Magazine July 04 2004 Edition posted a Baer brake kit for the wrx.

Its called a WRX GT Brake System.

Supposedly available for the 2002-2004 Subaru WRX. A direct bolt on conversion.
Not sure if it will fit under the 16x6.5 wheel of the wrx.

Im trying to find more info on their website but no go. Website isnt very user friendly. Ill keep trying to find more info.
