'98 IMPREZA OBS Mysterious Rear Drum Noise!!!
For some time I experience the squeaking noise coming from rear left drum brake! The noise mostly (but not only!) can be heard after prolonged period of frequent braking (ie. slow tunnel traffic etc.) and only while speed is maintained below 15-20MPH. With greater speeds there is no noise whatsoever!!! The noise sometimes seems to be related to wheel rotation! Brake drums are always cool, even after extended period of city driving, with a lot of street light stops!!! E-brake works fine!
Hitting the pedal hard to readjust/reposition shoes does not help!!! Cylinders, shoes and even pins, springs and dishes holding shoes in place, were replaced recently, but it did NOT solve the problem!!!
I inspected inner drum's surfaces and they look fine, with no visible grooves or scratches!!!
Is anyone out there with a clue???????????
Would be very grateful!!!

wheel bearing is done for...
I also have a 98 OBS, and had to replace my left rear bearing. They used unsealed bearings in the rear of our cars, and it's a very common problem to have them go out. They have updated the replacement part # (a tapered, roller-style sealed bearing), which are stock in legacy models. If you need the part #, I can get it for you- I've got it somewhere.
When mine went, I could only notice it at slow speeds at first. But stared to sound worse and worse and I was eventually able to tell at all speeds. You can do more damage (to the hub, etc) if you drive on it too long

Not totally sure if these apply to your year- but this is what I got for mine (just one side):
28016AA030 bearing assy. 74.50
28015AA050 oil seal 12.54
28015AA100 oil seal 12.16
28015AA110 oil seal 13.50
total parts: $ 112.70
total labor: 2.4hrs $ 153.60

if you need more info... I've got a copy of the 'Endwrench' service bulletin where it outlines the procedure-
looks like they charge now http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/ixSe...rd=&bulletin=3

I have a '00 Impreza L, and for the past few weeks I've been hearing a high-pitched squealing coming from the right rear at low speeds. Is this like what you're talking about? My car has 33k miles on it, so I hope it isn't a wheel bearing. Anyway, I've got an appointment to get it checked out next week.

Drum brake turned bad bearing!!!!!
It appears that I have just triggered an avalanche of bad squeaking bearings in our beloved OBS treasures!!! I'd like to thank Scoobsport98 for knowledge and support and for leading us in right (!) direction in the fog of our not so well founded suspicions!!!
Even if our journey would be costly - there is at least a hope that at the end everything is gonna be OK!!!
Thanks again

Here ya go: the first is just a 'notice' about the change, the second one is the one I have (which shows most steps)... the bottom one (8mb) is the complete procedure...

scoobsport98 thanks alot for posting the endwrench links. they convinced me to take it to a dealer. the price of the tools i would have to buy, is far more than the dealer installation price. thanks for being so thorough

What The *@%$
So I just called the "stealership" and asked what they would charge to replace the rear wheel bearing..... ready for this? they said it would be $400 dollars. $425 if I wanted new lug studs. that is outrageous! how accurate was the $265? was that a dealership?

If you have a mechanic order the parts for you, he will most likely make a little $$$ on them- so this is the cheapest route.
The parts may be more expensive now, I had this done a couple years back- but most of the difference is probably in the labor costs. So I guess you want to look around for a reputable import mechanic in your area- good luck
And no problemo on the links... just took a google search
