Before I wrecked my car my answer would have been yes. Now, I think a bit differently. Let me put it like this to you..

In the 3 or 4 years that I've been on my own policy and paying my own insurance, I've paid out MAYBE $7,000. My accident in my WRX, which caused hardly any actual damage cost my insurance company $10,000 to fix. Seriously - the hood is 500, headlights 700, foggies 500, etc.

I'm up 3,000

Now, think about that. My insurance company has lost over $3,000 on me alone and I'm certainly not the only one to wreck my car. They have to cover their *** because it's expensive. It sucks to have to pay insurance because it's real expensive, but when you need it, it's a god send. I'd be seriously screwed if I had no insurance and a $10,000 (a third of my yearly net pay) bill to repair my car.

Accidents and theft happen more in CA and for me, I drive like 17,000 miles a year. As a young driver on the road with millions of moms in suvs on their phones, it's a liability big time

To answer about how i afford it is with my current job i can make the payments on my car and i'll pay it off in a 5 year loan. My parents will let me stay at home if i want to for the duration of the loan. So when the car gets payed off i move out. By the way I just turned 18

Ok I have had 3 insurance companies, USAA, Geigco, and Progressive. Like you I have a clean driving record. I'm now 20, almost 21. I payed 2,000 every 6 months with Geigco, but with USAA I now pag $600. It is great. I'm upgrading to an STi and there is only a small increase in insurance.
