Also, the majority of those three percent probably aren't on the road anymore due to driver error, not manufacturer error, i.e. totalled.
I don't mean to discredit waht you said, but I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't know how impressive it is.

Do a google search on reliability and you will see that Subaru, Honda, Toyota and Nissan are the most reliable cars made.

Just under 29,000 here, 3 years of ownership, proper break-in, no abuse....the only problems I've had were a computer in need of reprogram (mine was one of the first shipments to the US, not an issue anymore), and a mysterious random taking on of water which could be seals or operator error, it's as of yet unsolved because of happening only twice a year or less.
So neither of these concern reliability, which to date has been 100%.

Problems:
Clutch shudder and slipping: replaced under warranty
Brake rotors warped: resurfaced under warranty
Really dangerous cruise control recall: done but wish I had heard of it sooner
No other problems. I've since switched to performance brakes with no problems and continue to drive the car without babying it with no worries. This WRX is a fairly hassle-free car until you modify it, at which time any car's reliability comes into question.
But here's more info: the 02 WRX has 4 technical service bulletins (problems known by the manufacturer) while my dad's 02 Chrysler Sebring has 40 technical service bulletins, and it is bone stock, automatic and is driven by an old man. If you ask me, ten times the problems means the car is ten times less reliable, making the Subaru a pretty darn good car.

Here is some info from consumerreports.org. They are supposed to be pretty reliable with information. I just came as close as I could with the numbers below since it won't let me post the graph. The info is based on years 2001, 2002, and 2003. Also the info is based on the average reliabity for these years so +45% is better than -45% etc. This site is pretty cool, but you have to pay $4.95 to look at all the information. I think it's well worth it though especially if you are considering buying a car.
