What's with car salesmen?

Yesterday I had my WRX in for service and while I was waiting for my courtesy ride I took a walk around the showroom to see if there was an STI (was not). Some salesman approached me, asked if he coud help and I said do you have an STI on site.

His response; "What's that?"

I could do his job better than him.

I've noticed also that apparently, automotive knowledge is not necessarily a prerequisite for car sales folks in general.

Car salesmen don't know much about the cars they're selling... but when it comes to financial stuff, they're experts! What's the world coming to?

Salesmen never have and never will be very knowledgable about cars. That's not their job- their job is to make you make the decision to buy. That's why I sucked at it- I knew all about the cars I was selling (Nissans, and sometimes Dodge products as we were a 2-line store) but I sucked at talking people into the decision to buy. They left happy, informed customers, who didn't have a new car.

Yeah, I've run into this before.

But this guy works for Subaru who sells one of the hottest cars on the market and he says "What's that"?

He later was telling me how cool his minivan was.

When I bought my Si from Honda the salesman at least knew they were hot sellers.

Salesman:
"Thats your yellow car parked in the lot over there"

Me: "Yep, that's my WRX, just bought it off you 2 months ago"

Salesman:
"Awesome! You going to do the "Fast and the Furious" with it.."

Me: "Uhhhh. what?"

Salesman:
"Are you going to get like an exhaust for it"

Me: "Oh... yea, (chuckle chuckle)

Salesman:
"What about a turbo, that would make your car awesome"

Me: "The car come STOCK with a turbo"

Salesman:
"Oh, that's right... yea...

Me: "If, you are selling these cars, why do you know NOTHING about them?" Then I walked out after that..

Pretty sad.

I understand that you won't know EVERYTHING about the stuff you are selling, but **** man.. come on! I am in retail and if I talked to you like these salespeople talked to me or from what I overheard while listening to them, then NO ONE would by anything off me...
It's pretty simple to sell, infact easy to me..

1. KNOW what you are selling.
2. Ask lifestyle qeuestions so you know what their needs are.
3. Recommend the propper product for the needs that they have told you.
4. Tell them the accessories that they need with that product.
5. Ask for the sale.

Pretty easy stuff... as long as you build repor (SP?) you can sell mostly anything.... lol :-)

Your probly correct in saying that most sales persons are entry level idiots.

But its not very nice to hit a man when their down in life. Maybe some can learn a thing or two someday. Lets just think though for a sec. these maybe the sales people you can see to give you your next great deal. I mean considering their so dense. he he he.

So how many time have you gone to Mc Donalds and the cashiers says something like. Aloha, welocme to Mc Donalds! May I have your order please?

Understanding you have been going to Mc Donalds for years with the same menu in front of your face your answer is,

" uuhhh, lets see now... hmm... could I have a few moments please".... and ther thinking... what an .....IDIOT. just having a little fun.
