Tranny fluid on 4eat

I am going to replace my 4eat tranny fluid and needed to know where the dipstick is so I can refill it after I drained it. I looked for my tranny dip stick on my 04 wrx automatic and there is a dipstick on the left and the right side of the car where it decribes it to be. Which one is the right one, and what is the other one for. The manual doesnt help much. thanks.

I'm pretty sure its on the left (when standing in front of the car). Let me check my service manual before you take that as fact though

checked service manual, its on the left side when looking at the car from in front of it

Front diff; the transaxle and front diff take two different fluids.

front diff. rear diff you fill and check right on the diff its self.

oh, and check the dip stick after each quart of ATF you put in. Mine did not take the 9qts the manual said it would. I think the 9qt capacity is for a complete rebuild when ALL of the ATF is drained, the drain plug I guess does not drain 100% of the fluid.

yeah, but it requires a massive socket (I forget what size)

Snipe'd ya Matt!

BTW, call your local Subaru parts dept and ask them how much fluid is needed for a 4EAT drain & fill. IIRC, it's only about 3qts total.

if you are standing in front of the car, the left side / passenger side is for the front diff. Right side / driver side is for the ATF. don't mix the two up since the front diff should use gear oil and not ATF fluid.

It's not the opposite. The tranny fluid dipstick is on the driver side of the tranny. The front diff is on the passenger side. The little dipstick is for the diff. The long one is for the trans. Worse case, drain the fluid then check both dipsticks. Which ever one is full is not the one you fill. :P

I know, cause currently my STi intercooler is in the way of me checking my tranny fluid.

Ok, good way to check as well. I just dont want to muck anything up! I will probably do it once the rain lets up a bit. Is the front diff's Fluid weight the same as the rear?
