Thinkin about venturing out into the world of Subaru
Hey all,
I have never been lucky enough to have been the owner of a subaru but I think I am ready to try one out.
I am very torn on the issue however for these reasons.
I have heard very good things about subaru but I also heard some of the worst things like they have alot of problems and nobody wants to work on them except the dealer. I also have heard that their longetivity is an issue as well.
Specifically, I have decided that if i do get one, it will be a wrx or a wrx sti. But one of the things i plan to do when i get the car (or after the break in period at least). is take the vehicle cross country. Will the WRX be able to undertake this challenge? the STi?
I know this being a subaru forum naturally the users will have a bias but I want to hear what you ahve to say. Your input is much appreciated and I thank you.
Erik

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been reading the boards? I think if you surf around, spend an hour or two just reading some of the posts (esp in the maintenence section) you'll notice that most of the issues arise when someone doesn't treat their car properly. Subaru's aren't Honda's, you can't beat the crap out of them and then expect them to be the same as when you drove it off the lot. That being said, if you do treat your Subie right, she'll treat you better than just about anything else on the road

Suby is reliable
I'm on my third Subaru (WRX, STi, Forester) and have had no uncommon problems with any of them. I do leave maintenance and service to the dealer as I think the engineering is a cut above every other Japanese make. Just as you wouldn't take an Audi to your local garage I don't think it's a good idea for the Suby as well. That said, we've never had any significant mechnical issue with any of our cars.
I drove the WRX and STi from North Carolina to Texas on two occasions each. There were no problems at all with either vehicle. The STi seats and general ride can be a bit uncomfortable as it's very stiff compared to the regular WRX. If you have any lower back issues, spend some time in the STi before commiting to a purchase. It can be abusive to an already aching back. The regular WRX is generally kinder and gentler on the back. I find the seats to be noticeably better - at least in the '02 WRX.
Best of luck in your search.
