stall with a/c on
I'm looking to buy a 2002 ts 2.5 wagon automatic and I tried the a/c out on it just for the hell of it, it was 20 degrees outside.
when the compressor engaged it sounded like the car wanted to stall but then it stopped doing it but then started again a few seconds later as if the clutch was trying to engage but the compressor was seized or couldn't turn for some reason. I popped the hood and when it was trying to stall the center part of the compressor pulley was not turning but I could see the belt turning behind it. is the center part of the pulley facing the front of the engine suposed to turn when the compressor is engaged.
I didn't up the rpm to try and free the compressor I didn't want to break anything.
what do you guys think, is the compressor under warranty
I guess I found a noisy one, the car sounds like it has no oil pressure when it is started cold but the noise goes away after it warms up. sounds like it has a very noisy valve train.
any ideas, Thanks for any advice

It's normal for the compressor to cycle on and off, what you observed was the compressor clutch operating. The pulley will always be spinning but the compressor shaft only turns when the electric clutch is activated.
At an ambient temp of 20 degrees the compressor will run only briefly if at all.

Thanks for the info, I'm familiar with the operation of the compressor although I'm no expert,
the problem is that when I think the compressor clutch is trying to engage (when the motor is trying to stall) the pulley is spinning but the compressor shaft is not or atleast what I can see of the shaft without taking anything off the motor is not spinning.
the car still is under warranty for major mechanical parts does that include the a/c compressor
thanks again for any comments or suggestions

It's possible the compressor is seized. With the engine off, try to turn the compressor shaft by hand. It should move with some resistance. If it won't budge at all it's seized.
If the car is still under the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty (or whatever it is up in Canada) the A/C components *should* be covered. However if it turns out the system was contaminated by physical damage (such as a rock through the condensor) the repair will not be covered.
Since you also mention engine noise, it is probably best to avoid this particular car and keep looking. That "valve train" noise could well be a rod bearing about to let go.

thanks for all the help guys
it's too late I already bought the car but the engine noise really isn't all that bad.
The compressor isn't seized I can turn it by hand but the clutch definitely doesn't engage.
The fans also don't come on when the a/c is turned on
The only thing that happens when I turn the a/c on is that the idle becomes erratic. It goes up and down slightly maybe 200rpms movement and the motor shakes noticible when it is at the low part of the rpm cycle when the rpm goes back up it stops shaking.
could this be the symptoms of a low charge of refrigerant.
thanks for the help in advance

Last summer everytime my gf turned her A/C on her car stalled. I cleaned the TB and now everything is all good.
Everytime you turn on the A/C there something that compensates for the extra load, what is that...?
I doubt low refrigerant would cause your car to stall, I could be wrong, but I'd rule that out of the equation.
