Proper engine break in: 2004 Outback Sport Wagon
#3
Just keep below 4000 rpms for about the first 1000 miles. Vary your rpm's every once in a while. Ie, if your on the highway cruising at 3500, every 30 minutes or so give it some gas and bring it up to 4k, maybe let it go down to 2500 and then bring it back up to 3500. You dont have to follow it religiously, but the more careful you are in the beginning the longer it will last I think.

I'd recommend getting ahold of a copy of "Break It In Right" by Robert Sikorsky. It's a bit dated, but following his break in procedures on modern vehicles can't hurt.
BlkRx is on the right track; Sikorsky goes into more detail.
Proper break in will help prevent many problems such as transmission failures, engine pinging, improperly worn brakes and severe engine trouble.
Some people don't believe in break in. Some of those people have rebuilt their transmissions or engines prematurely, too .
