looking at a 2001 Subaru Impreza RS ...
i have a few things to ask about this car . the car has 25,000 miles on and is a 5 speed.
1)the motor is a 2.5?
2)what types of mods and power gains can you get with this car?
i know thats a question with vast answers to it.
3) any problems with that year or body style?
thanks for your help

noob answer...i just did a bunch of research on the older cars...
1) all the RS's are 2.5s after 98, they had the Phase II motor (SOHC) that is much more reliable than the Phase I (DOHC) which tended to overheat.
2) i'll leave that to others...my guess is the best bet would be to swap in a turbo motor...a lot of work, esp when they sell WRX's now...
3) overall (based on what i read before buying my 97 OBS) these cars are pretty bulletproof...aside from the phase I 2.5L's. My guess is that if it has been taken care of, with many miles, is *should* be in decent shape. I bought mine wth 85K on it & it goes like stink on a monkey.
good luck!

I had a 2001 RS and still would if it woudn't have been for circumstances beyond my control. It was a great car.
Things to look out for. Head gasket, I had one changed at about 13 000 miles. Rear wheel bearings, I had one changed as well, not sure of the mileage though. Clutch sudder in cold weather. I'm talking about at -10F up here in Canada. The clutch also has a tendancy to slip. Those are the only problems I had with it. All changed under warranty. Even the clutch. Although, you may want to spend the money on an aftermarket clutch if you plan on doing anytype of racing with it.
There are all kinds of aftermarket parts for this car. Do a search. Check out the Perormance Forums.
My plan is to buy another one and do a engine/tranny WRX swap.
All in all a great car.

like he said, there is some clutch shudder but its under warranty. the only other thing that i've heard of going wrong is the front O2 sensor. but there was a recall on some of the 01's so it may be replaceable for free. i'm pretty happy w/ mine...it's a good car.

Yes, most likely you will get shudder. I have an 01 RS and my brother has an 02 WRX. Both get shudder. (just a subaru thing) This only happens when you first drive it, after that it will go away once it warms up. A dealer will replace it but be prepared to get dicked around. They will probably say they need to replicate it in order for them to fix it and you know they will say it never happened to them. Also, if the car has more than 50k I don't even bother getting the shudder problem fixed for free.

The phase II engines, like that car has, are starting to show head gasket problems. I'm having mine replaced just under 80k, covered under an extended warranty. Seems like its something SoA knows of but there's no recall. I think that is covered under the 6/60 warranty to begin with, though, so you've got a decent amount of time before you have to worry about it.
Also, paint is kind of sketchy. I gave up and had my front end repainted about 10000 miles ago and the paint on it now is already looking better than the stock paint did after 10k miles. But that's no reason to not get the car. Just keep an eye out for a leaky headgasket if you get it. Mine's stock after all these years and it's as much fun to drive now as it was the day I got it.
