Legacy LS 2.2 @ 112,000miles
I've found a 1991 Legacy LS Wagon for sale locally with the 2.2, auto, AWD, etc. and 112,000 miles on the clock. I've never owned a Subaru before - mostly big American machinery - when does the timing belt / waterpump need replacing? Should it have been done already? What about wheel bearings, axle joints/boots/seals? How long until the trans should be rebuilt?

It will need a timing belt at 120K. That also means water pump and oil seals while you've got the thing open. Runs from @ $850-$1000 depending where you are.
Auto transmissions in those typically give up in the low 100K range, according to the service managers I've talked to.
My 2.2 (5 speed) needed new CVs (front, you just replace the whole axle assembly) at 145K. Call shops for estimates, I think mine ran @ $450 I think.

Take what you will spend on the car, the repairs and the worry and buy a new Sub, whatever model, unless all you want to do is go to the grocery store a mile away. Think of the upcoming winter: the battery if over 5 yrs old is a likely goner. Think of the tires: are they a second or third set. Think of the shocks, etc., especially if the road gets rough. If you live in AZ and only travel the flat, dry, smooth streets of Phoeniz, you' be ok. Here in the NE I'm looking forward to feets of snow, -10f mornings, pot holes next spring like you wouldn't believe and my 02 WRZ is an outsider (the wife's Honda gets the garage).
