If you're worried about it, get the oil changed (it won't hurt). However, if you follow the manual, it says to change it @ 3,000. It boils down to your choice.

I'm old fashioned when it comes to breakin procedures: I would (and did) change every 1K miles for first 3-5K, just to be sure to flush all the little thingees out- bearing metal stuff, micro edges, etc. I doesn't cost much, and who knows, it could result in many Ks of extra trouble free miles.

No offense, but I'm not sure what the dilemma is here. If you're really concerned about it, get the oil changed (it won't hurt anything). ......or follow the manual and go in @ 3,000 miles. Personally, I follow one simple rule: When in doubt, follow the manual.

i would change it at 1000 miles
again at 3000 miles
every 3k after that

some people say that they saw little metal shavings inside their oil filters at 1000 miles

Car Info: 04 Blue TS
I have driven over 500k in the past 10 years (150k on a 93 tempo 250k on a ford E-150 and 100k on a 95 mercury sable all new never cared about "break in" miles and never had any engine problems. With that said I did change my oil at 2500 on my '04 TS and will change it again at 5k then every 5k like I did on the rest of my cars.
P.S.
Everything on else on the Tempo broke but it ran good !
