How hard is to replace a starter

I'm 100% know I have a bad starter and is out of $ on replace. I can get a replacement for like $130 but don't want to pay for labor for the mechanic for installation. Sometimes if they order the parts for me they have a tendency to mark up the price and still charge me labor.

The starter can be seem from above but alot of hose and wires are making it hard to access. do i have to remove and install it from under the car? Is a jack stand enough or it needs a lift?

Thanks

What model car? I think its pretty much just a unplug it/unbolt it operation, i just checked my chiltons manual for some of the late 90's model engines and thats all it says to do. If its a WRX or something else, probably a tad harder (IE stuff in the way)

From the position, I think you just need it on a ramp if you have a lowered car. If not, you should be able to crawl under that thing with just the front wheel on a 2 x 4 maybe.

You dont need to have the car lifted at all.

The starter is on the driver's side of the top part of the tranny where it meets the engine block. There is a switch wire and a power wire. The power wire is held by a 12mm nut under the rubber boot. Then, there are 2 bolts that hold the starter to the tranny and to the block. Take those off and you are done.

Of course, if you have a WRX, you will need to remove the intercooler. If you have RS, you might need to remove the airbox.

Very easy. Maybe 1 hour job at the most.

I have a 98 2.5 rs..........the starter is located next to the brake fluid reservoir. It's hi up but I think it would be only accessable from below cause of all the hose and wires.

The mean concern is would I be able to unbolt it from underneath the car?

for now I think I'll have someone do it for me cause I have an automatic and when I try to order they give me a choose of 2 starters with diff bolt spacing

Be sure to disconnect the battery before servicing the starter motor.

OK today I replaced the starter on my 98rs. It was one of those job you can do at home. all you need is a ramp and you can figure out the rest of the stuff yourself.

the one thing is it would be alot ALOT easier if you have another person helping you when you try to remove the old starter.

The starter can be only taken out from the top. the tranny pipe is blocking the thing from the bottom

overall it took me an hour but 1/2 of the time is setting up stuff to work

1 hour of work save me $200.....I feel pretty good now...........the starter is only 45 total new...remanuf .........F my ripoff mechanic.......usually this fakket would write down $200 for the starter and $68 for labor........M the F er! I hate this guy

Glad that you were able to replace the starter without too much hassle, and saved money at the same time.
