total it

argue with the insurance company. Call them 5 times per day, and don't stop until they total the car. Request a re-evaluation on the value of the car to see if you can get it lowered. Request another estimate on the damages to see if you can get the total increased. Do ANYTHING you can to make sure your car is totalled, and don't stop until you win, or die trying. Why?
1) It will never drive the same if it has frame damage. No matter what they say
2) If an insurance claim was filed on it, it will go on carfax, if the accident was severe enough for them to think about totalling you, it'll go on as moderate, or even "severe". Would you buy a car with a "severe" accident on the record from a 19 year old (you). I sure as heck wouldn't. No offense or anything.

my parents told them to fix it against what i wanted, nothin i can do. my dad knows that im upset about the car being fixed and how i dont want it anymore, even though there was no frame damage. he said we will figure something out so i can get a WRX. he would rather me have a rex than the cobra.

That's not always true. I had an accident in my WRX. $10k claim. CarFax is none the wiser.

It doesn't really matter because Ill tell any potential buyers when I go to sell, but still, CarFax doesn't catch everything.

lucky

sonicsuby: you're lucky. If you handle your accident on your own, there's obviously no way for Carfax to know, but generally if there's an accident report filed, or an insurance claim paid, they can get their hands on it. Technically, if somebody bought your car, and later found out that it was wrecked, an accident of that severity would probably fall under the terms of Carfax's "guarantee", which could cost them quite a bit of change....

Maybe I'll let a possible buyer know about that and we'll split the CarFax money

With my accident I had a police report and an insurance pay out (I'm not covering $10k outta pocket). The insurance company did handle it as a comp claim, not collision, so maybe that's the issue :|

I was given a 1989 Mitsubishi Precis that had been used as a fleet vehicle to deliver paperwork to companies around the Bay Area. 230k miles on the body, 140k miles on the motor, and it was all mine for $50/mo + $50/mo for insurance. Car didn't go more than 3 weeks at a time without something breaking - clutch cable went the first day I had my drivers license, clutch shortly after, battery, then one day we came out to the car and there was a rather large oil pool on the driveway.

SWEET!

When someone is helped out with money or whatever on their cars and such, it's no reason to hate them or be bitter. It really depends on how they act - if they're smug about it then you can hate them, if they appreciate and know how lucky they are, then they're ok with me. As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy my parents dealt with my car situations as they did. It taught me how expensive cars can be, and why it's important to keep up on the maintenance. It also taught me what to do when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere at 5am Sunday morning and you're supposed to be at work in 30 minutes. I learned a lot between 16 and 18.

It also taught me how hard it is to make money, and how important it is to save and do the right things with the money you have because you never know if things are going to change tomorrow, so you should be ready for it
