Gasket on oil filter?
Okay the last itme I put a wrench to a Subaru it was and 84 GL wagon. Is the crush washer important; you know th eone on the oil filter. Let's just say I have just changed the oil and figured out that it has one; would it be bad to drive for another 3,000? Also I am new to the forum and I have had my STI for about a month, any help would be cool.
Oh one more thing is there an after market teflon gasket for the oil pan plug or do I have to get it from Suby.

oil filters themselves have a large ring that keeps it from leaking if it does. as far as the oil pan plug i dont think it maters. i used one from another packaging that was like 2 bucks, fits fine. i dunno it is good or not, but it is there so i asume there is a purpose. i am thinking you could just take take the filter out and put a new one, and then check the oil level and add accodringly

If its not leaking you are probably ok. It is usually a good idea to swap the drain plug crush washer when you change the oil to get a good seal without needing the plug to be too tight. I buy them at the same time as the filters and they're only 50c or something.

you should ideally change crush washers every time you loosen the oil drain bolt. that said, a lot of people don't and never have any problems. just keep a close eye on your oil lever, and check for leaks until you change your oil next -- then put a crush washer on.

in my experience most places will sell you the oil filter and the drain plug crush washer as a set. the oil filter is to be installed with the o-ring gasket only. the crush washer might cause a problem if installed on the oil filter threads. if the drain plug is not leaking then it's ok. it's a good policy to replace the drain plug crush washer with each oil change cause if it leaks it will be hard to change without draining the new oil.
