Car Washing
I baby my '03 WRX. Wash once a week; wax once a month. But with the winter months coming up, a wash is gonna be a pain in the rump! I just wanna know if the brushes at the pubic car washes (i.e. Shammy Shine) are really that bad for your car body or if it won't matter too much. Any suggestions?

I would never use those brushes at the car wash. They are not rinsed out after each use. If the person before you used it to clean dirt or sand (or anything abrasive) off their vehicle you could be in for a surprise!

Do you have any of those covered outdoor do-it-yourself car washes nearby? The ones you put a bunch of quarters in and you get five minutes of high pressure water and soap. That's what I would probably do. However, where I live, we don't get snow. So I'm not sure if that would be practical for you.

Yeah. That's what the Shammy Shines are all about but when I had my Neon (which I didn't care too much about) the foaming brushes were key to getting your car clean. But nic3krnnamja83 suggested I tryout the high pressure wash stuff. I'll give that a try. Any idea on how bad road salt is for you paint job?

Yeah that's a good idea. I took it to the Shammy Shine last night and did the power soaper thing, that worked out pretty well. I'm in North Jersey, Hunterdon County. You shoulda had you Sub here for the snow dude. Good times.

if you really have to use the brush for some reason. make sure you use the spray and wash off most if not all the dirt on the brush first before using. I would hand wash without using the brush as much as possible.

I was planning on just washing m'self using the armor all wipes... sucha hassle tho
oh and also, is it detrimental if I wax it when it's really cold out?

dont wash your car when its too cold or too hot. i use to go to those do it yourself car washes but it sempt like i got more scratches from the brushes. i live in a 23 story building here in LA and i dont have access to a hose. so i went to TARGET and bought myself one of those pressure weed things (u put water in it and give it a few pumps and the water is pressurized) to wash my car. I also went out and bought a few terry cloth towels. i cut off the seems and the tags. i washed them with no soap. and i dried them with no fabric softener. im currently using mcguires carnabu (sp.?) wax. and mcguires polish. so far since june i have washed my car at least once every two weeks. and i have yet to see any swirl marks. if you have the time i recommend doing it all yourself. its very relaxing but it takes me to wash and wax my car about 2 hours. and sometimes more. but ill tell you what.... its pays off when you see your car in the sunlight clean as a whistle...

I don't know why you would even wash it in winter - driving around with snow/salt/sand covered roads should ruin your wash job in about 1 mile. Maybe the wash at the Chevron (touchless) would work - pretty cheap and gives it a good spray down. Just don't get their wax crap.
