Red face Buying used: How to not get the headgasket issue?

Hi folks

A lot of people, myself included, are very interested in buying a used Subaru.

However, the issue of the headgaskets has got a lot of us really concerned about buying a used Subaru.

I was wondering if anyone could give us tips as to how to detect a possible headgasket problem, or how to find a good used Subaru in general.

I really like Subbies, but my budget says no to even the new 2004 2.5TS.

Thanks!

Is it just that you either get lucky or you don't (with the headgasket issue)?
