Burning Smell from new car.
Hi, I am a newbie here. I just pick up my brand new 04 WRX Wagon last night, but I am curious about some thing. After I park it into my garage, I found a strong burning smell from the engine bay. I can't tell where exactly it is comming from, but it is somewhere in the engine bay. I wonder if it is normal? Or something I need to bring it back to check it. I never found this kind of buring smell in all my previous new car, but I never have a turbo car. So I wonder if this is different. Anyway, thanks for all of your help.

I had the same thing on my 04 wrx wagon. Now at 1700 miles and it's all but disappeared. I imagine with all new parts there is gonna be some residues to burn off in the beginning.
On a separate issue, during the break-in period, I noticed my tailpipe accumulating a lot of soot. I cleaned it off around 700 miles, but it's come back a little bit. Sound familiar to anyone?

That sound about right... You know I never have such smell in all my previous car during break in. And my past car Audi A4, have such buring smell and was caused by oil leak. Then I am so panaoid about smell on car. I keep my Audi very good, Mobil 1, all maintenance all done on time. But it leak start from 40k miles. That's sucks. I used to be a VAG (VW and Audi) fan, but now I really sick of it, after I fixed my first leak, then I drove it less than 3k miles. Dealer told me it got a leak at other place. I really think their seal have big problem. Anyway, my nightmere is over, and having a good night sleep with my 04 WRX wagon..

I think the burning smell is caused by protective coatings getting burned off the exhaust system. My understanding is that new cars have a protective coating on the exhaust components to prevent corrosion while in transit.
I've experienced the same thing in other cars. After a thousand or so miles, it should disappear.

Burning smell is also normal, my car still has a distinct smell when cooling down after almost 20,000 miles - not like a burning smell anymore though.

The coating is cosmolene, it is applied to the exposed metal/mechanical parts to protect them while the car is being shipped overseas. It can take many thousands of miles to burn off completely to the point where you won't smell it anymore.

my car is two weeks old, and one day i started noticing a burning smell inside the car. This is my first manual car, and it was a rough start but its smoothed out a whole lot. I can't smell the burning outside the car, but its noticable inside. Is this cosmolene? Am i only supposed to be able to smell it from the inside?

possibility that your brakes are breaking in too. they smell when they are new, but the smell will go away in about 100 miles or so. or you could just be riding the clutch too much or something
