I have an 03, and I bought it in Carson City, NV, so when I tried to register it in CA, I had to smog it, reguardless of the fact that it was brand new......it was an "out of state" car even though the dealership I got it from, had it transferred from a dealer in Sacto. go figure......
that said, It is a visual and a sniffer IIRC.....the good part is, because its AWD they cant put it on the dyno and induce a load.....so it is strictly the sniffer and visual.

does the 4-6 year exemption apply only if you bought the car brand new in 02...what if you bought the car just last year from private party and had to have it smogged when you bought it...the exemption doesnt apply to you anymore right? its the every other year or 2 years smog rule right?

From DMV's web site:
"Vehicles registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program are required to submit evidence of a smog certification every other renewal period. Owners of vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years instead of being required to provide a biennial smog certification. The registration renewal notice mailed to you by the department will indicate if a smog certification is required. If a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees. However, you will not receive your new registration or year sticker until the smog information has been received by DMV."
So, even if you buy the vehicle used, you just pay the abatement fee instead. This fee appears on you registration renewal as a $12(?) charge.

it's nice to know we all pay the $12 with out any knowlage or argument as towards what it's for.
why not just smog exempt? Cause the there are companies with generators and other factory type engines that polute the crap out of our air. and for some reason the state needs funding for it.
Air Pollution Control Fund, look into it if you have dought.

Just to be clear!
So let me get this straight.
In general, if you have an 02' you won't have to smog until "your" registration month of 08', and like wise an 03' till 09' etc?
If so, that's sweet!

Yup. June '05 would have been the first year for me, but the rules changed in Jan '05 IIRC.
