'98 2.5 Head gasket/warped block
Hi, I have a 1998 Outback Limited, which I have babied to the full extent of the meaning. The engine blew the head gaskets at 121,900 mi. I paid just over $3,000 to have it fixed by the dealer, and here I am 181000, and they are blown again they tell me. They dont want to fess up to a default part(I am in engineering school and from my laymans knowledge, its obvious that it was), or that they failed to machine the heads before putting on the new seals. Now they tell me, the block is warped, and its gonna be pushing $8,000 for a new motor. I contacted Colorado component rebuilders, whcih specialize in rebuilt subaru motors, they offer a 2.5 long block for $2900 and it comes with a 36,000 mi. warranty. I want to get another 60 out of the car, as this subaru whips the crap out of my 2005 Audi A6 in the snow, and since I live in the mountains, I like getting home in my Subaru rather than walking from the highway. I am a college kid, definetly wish I had the 8 grand on hand, but dont, and am a little ticked with the way my dealership has been handling this. Evidently, its been over a year since I had the gaskets replaced, so they wont warranty them regardless of mileage. They charged me $600 to pull the motor out this time and tell me what was wrong with it. Warped block? is that possible? I thought only the heads would be warped, but they said the heads were fine. Help??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The only way you can tell if it is warp, is to run a straight edge with a feeler gauge on the block and on the heads mating surfaces. However, if you didn't overheat the engine, the block and heads shouldn't warp. But if you did overheat that engine, I would opt for the long block for 2500. Save you the hassle. Good luck.
