2005 WRX transmission breaks down b4 500miles!??!?
Ok, I dont know if this is wrong posting about this, or posting this in the wrong area. But uhh I read this thread http://wrxtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5722 yesterday about how a guys transmission broke before 400 miles was even put on the car. Do you think this is a BS story, or he really just got one of the "Bad Batches" of the WRX's. Thats really hard to believe and makes me sad haha. Because me and my dad are planning on getting a 05 this weekend. Kind of scares me. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the feedback!

That thread is a good read. The only thing that i question is.... In the very first post from him he says he went to shift at 4500 rpm. Break in is 4000 rpm. If he just pulled out of a parking lot and was shifting at 4500 rpm i'd say he was on it a little. Also he said that the car had 180 miles on it when he got it. Could have been clutch dropped, and who knows what else. Also he said that he paid 32k for it. HUH. He justifies it with a spoiler and a short shifter? I think we may be dealing with an idiot. I know that may be a little judgemental but c'mon. I'd say he was hard on it for the 220 miles that he drove it and it was probably beat on before that. Someone at the dealer probably tookit out and beat the crap out of it "just to see what it would do". Probably dropped the clutch at like 6k or something. Also i think he could have an RA gearset put in for $2400 and that price at half seems a little steep. He says that the dealer was not replacing the tranny and they were going to fix it. 4800 for the whole thing seems crazy. Just my 2 cents.

The '05's to my knowledge are supposed to have some of the flaws commonly found in the 02-04 models. If he sidestepped the clutch or dumped it . . . he might not know what those are and he just thinks he is driving the car normal. Do any of those 2 things to any transmittion it will cause problems.

Sounds like user error to me too. I don't see how you can break your transmission if you're still breaking the car in. You're supposed to be easy on it, to let the clutch break in, the rings seat, the brake pads wear in, etc. If you're breaking it in there's no way you could break the transmission unless you're being an idiot and not breaking the car in like you're supposed to.
And even then it takes an awful lot of force to break a transmission. You won't break one just by driving casually, or even mildly hard... lord knows I ran my WRX through its paces after it was broken in, and it was fine.

i had my 2005 wrx for about 1 month.. and i been breaking in the car slowly
When i bought the car it had 10 miles on it.. and i been breaking in..
until today i put down around 600 miles.... its my first manual stick car.. so i'm learning how to drive stick while trying to take it easy and shifting around 3000-4000 rpm..
i really had no problem with the transmission other than 1st to 2nd.. you really have to feather the clutch so it's a smooth ride..
with regular driving.. you should have no problem..

It's entirely possible that there was some kind of defect in that particular transmission. Starting in '03 the transmissions were beefed up a bit over the '02s so the breakage is less common unless you're beating on the car.
So, regardless of the fact that he might have been on the gas a bit hard, and shifting a bit high for break in, 4500 rpm at full throttle is nowhere near enough to break a properly functioning transmission. It might just have been a defect.

.

these "flaws" were kept hush hush, as it would damper wrx sales.
however even though weak(according to race standards) the tranny is more than enough for normal daily driving. in 2005 i can't imagine for subaru to go backwards... but anything is possible.... i promise
