02-03 WRX Milage
Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a WRX as a daily/spirited driver. I already have a very fast car (88 Mazda RX-7 with 93 twin turbo engine), so I'm not looking to do much to the car for modifications. I've been looking around at cars in my area and found a silver sport wagon that is listed for $12,999. This sounds like a great price compared to most of what I've seen. The car has approx 78,000 miles whidh is probably on the high side of a turbo car, but I'm wondering what kind of issues am I likely to see with this kind of milage? I saw another thread about having to replace head gaskets at 100,000 miles, but I'm wondering what else. Also as far as the price, considering it's lowballing most of the competition out there, do you guys think this is a "to good to be true situation? Thanks for your input. I haven't seen the car in person yet by the way.

make sure it had the 60,000 mile maintainance. second. what year is the car?
when you look at the car- because its so cheap i say check everything... and run a carfax on the car if you can. though it may not have been in a major accident it is possible it had some form of major damage(i.e. flood etc.) yes its a good price. research what the average price is for a car of similar equip and mileage. whether is a 02 or 03 78,000 miles is kinda high. and is the car private party or dealership?

I currenty own an '03 WRX Sedan, but have 14 years experience driving 4-banger turbos. My first was a '90 Mitsubishi GS Turbo (1st generation Eclipses were great cars!) which I purchased new and used as a daily driver until buying the WRX. It's all about how the car was taken care of and maintained. I got 260K miles off of the Eclipse. When I sold it privately after moving up to the WRX, it was just beginning to burn a little oil on long idles and heavy load.
I did oil and filter changes at 3-4, sometimes 5K miles, got the scheduled maintenance done and made of point of running the car full/throttle-/full boost at least once a day, usually on the freeway onramp on the way to work. I gave the engine a cooling-down period before shutting down if I thought the turbo might still be very hot.
The original intercooled turbo died at 196K miles and was replaced. No big deal. While I had that done, I had the engine compression tested, noticed some discrepancies and had all of the valves replaced as preventive maintainance. I replaced the radiatior myself sometime when the car was 3-5 years old. At different times during that 13-year period, I put in a new water pump, replaced a bad alternator, some rear suspension parts and that's about it.
A well designed, well maintained 4-cylinder turbo can be a wonderful thing. Reasonable gas milage, reliable, quick power and light handling...
