The Subaru ranks higher in both safety and reliability. The reason for the higher insurance is the larger number of wrecks and a higher than average theft rate. Unfortunate but true.

I went from a '00 Volvo V40 to '03 WRX Wagon two weeks ago, insurance went up $75 every 6 months from $330 to $405. 34 years old, no accidents. Also no speeding tickets...yet. Volvo had a turbo the size of a Walnut, only barely quicker than your average SUV, not recommended. Think the increase is due to the number of wrecked WRX's, don't hear about many wrecked V40's. Otherwise cars should be similar in the eyes of insurance companies, both similar in crash tests, both weigh within 150lbs (Subie heavier) and both turbo's. Gotta be # of wrecks and AWD.

I went from a 1993 mr2 turbo to my wrx. I was paying double at my first insurance agency. Now I still pay about $1200 every 6 months. <--- I know! very pricey, but it is better than paying 2200 every 6 months. I switched over to e-surance for cheaper prices. Maybe you should look into changing to different insurance companies. BTW the car was financed by me and insured by me and I'm only 20, which would be the reason why it cost so much.
