I keep seeing these things advertised but I don't know exactly what they are. They are called a "Dog Box" as far as I can tell it is a replacement type of gear set for the tranny. What I don't know is whether the teeth are cut differently, are they just heat treated, what is the deal?

a dog style tranny is different in that it has no synchros. so instead of just depressing the clutch, and moving the shifter you have to match the engine speed and tranny speed much more. the engagement of the gears is different. i know how works in my head, but i can't really explain it too well. but the way the gears lock together is much stronger and more possitive.
dog box = stronger, better for racing, higher hp engines, but also harder to drive for inexperienced drivers
