Doesn't the Impreza still use the 4EAT?
If so, in addition to the reasons stated above, you have worse gear ratios for your 0-60 time. I had an Outback loaner with the normally aspirated 2.5l mated to a 4EAT and first gear in that thing was LLLOOONNNNGGGGG. It was scary slow at altitude.
You also have to consider that with a manual tranny, the magazines are probably launching the car at 4-5k rpm, which you can't do in a stock automatic.

I recently had a 2010 Forrester as a loaner while my WRX was in the shop for the 90k service, and the transmission was absolutely pathetic; it would hold low RPM until 9/10ths of the throttle and then suddenly jump to 2nd gear (on the HIGHWAY) in even a mild passing situation, redlining the motor before just as suddenly hopping back to OD. Subaru's crappy AT support (don't even get me started on CVTs) is one of the reasons I've never bought my wife a Subaru, and one of the reasons that I will most likely not buy a Subaru in the future.

There is no 6-speed automatic available for that year or any Legacy. You are referring to the "5-speed" CVT, which is five fake shift points added electronically to a continuously-variable transmission.

Drive a DSG VW, an SMGII M3 or an EVO MR, and you'd realize what you're missing. Or a Porsche PDK, or a Lexus Sport Direct Shift... When a loaded STI is coming in at $39k, Subaru can afford to spend some cash on transmission tech that doesn't date back to the early '90s.
An example: a Hyundai Tucson comes with a six-speed paddle-shifted true automatic (not a CVT) for $1800 less than the equivalent 4EAT Forester that so badly disappointed me, and with 11 more MPG for identical horsepower.
