Why not mod a 2.5RS rather than a WRX?
Im sorry if this has been beat to death already, but Ive been reading a ton here and I dont think I totally understand this issue. Lets say you wanted to buy and modify an impreza. Assuming the only differences between the 2.5 and the WRX are the engine size, the presence of the turbo system, and the vented hood (correct me if Im wrong on this), wouldnt it be smarter to start with a stock 2.5 and add a vented hood and subaru turbo parts. It seems to me youd have a better perfoming vehical for less money (assuming you were going to replace the entire turbo system on your wrx anyway).
Sorry if this post didnt make much sense... ive had a lot of caffine... but Id be happy to elaborate on anything I said.

Thanks for the reply Cabal
Other than the engine size, hood, and turbo system, are there explicitly any differences between the 2.5RS and the WRX? The underspoiler options at www.subaru.com are available for the WRX but not for the 2.5. Will an STi body kit (for a WRX) fit on a 2.5RS? How about fitting JDM headlights, or UK300s, or Morettes (for a WRX) on a 2.5RS? I want to stick with STi and Prodrive parts. Would it be possible to put an STi turbo charger, up pipe, down pipe, manifold, and the rest of the turbo system on the 2.5? In other words: will Subaru turbo pars for a WRX fit on a 2.5RS?
If every aftermarket part that fits on a WRX will fit on a 2.5, I see no reason not to get a 2.5. I understand that the warranty will not allow certain modifications (like the addition of a turbo kit), but I plan on modifying within the allowances of the warranty for a while. Thanks in advance for any replies and advice.

You can run all those turbo parts. You just have to worry about the pistons because the NA EJ25 motor runs at 10:1 compression ratio. Somwhere from 8.0:1 to 8.5:1 compression ratio pistons will make it engine a lot more reliable and less engine knock.

Fuji K beat me to it. The biggest advantage of a factory turbo car for modding is a boost friendly motor. Lower compression ratio = more boost before detonation. You also get a DOHC motor with the WRX and I believe it's internals are stronger than the NA 2.5, although I'm not sure and could not tell you specifically what components have been reinforced...
The new factory 2.5 turbo which Subaru will put in the STi and others is going to be a great starting spot for insane power modifications...of course not by me. The novelty hasn't really worn off much from the 227 or so I've got now!

i am
I have a 02 RS. And i have put in some $ and time to get my car to look, act, and be fast.
If you want a fast car with no work get a WXR
If you want a car that can be fast with not a lot of $ git a RS.

Curious, but how much $ did it take "to be fast" and how close would you say it is to the WRX in terms of both "speed" and
"handling"?

i dont have the know how to put a turbo on, but i just cant afford a WRX so i am going to go with an RS and then save some money for the turbo kit... either that or a ej20 swap i have no idea yet.
ej20 swap for 7k (from what i heard) or a turbo kit for 4.5k the turbo rs would be in low 13's high 12's i assume (good driver)
even tho i wont be using this as a drag car, be nice to know how fast it is
