Why does the boxer motor sound so rough for?

I know that a boxer fires in a different order than a normal inline-4 ... But I don't know what the firing order is. One of the things I've noticed is occasionally, the car will shift back and forth a bit when it's idling..
In a way, I like the sound when it's idling, but I LOVE the sound when you're on it!
It's definitely one of the most different sounding engines I've been around. Words can't describe...

have any of you guys heard a subbie with just a mid or pipe or less??? i have driven legacys w/ no midpipe (for testing reasons at a garage) and lemme tell you they are LOUD! we drive the old loyales in the junk with nothing from the y-pipe back, and sometimes no y-pipe at all! those cars were even louder. its such weird poping noise. one of the loudest oddest sounding cars w/o no exhaust system on at all. o by the way, i don't reccomend driving down the street w/ no exhaust, people don't like it too much!!!

u know whats even rougher? your engrish
no but seriously, i love the sound. right now i just have a borla muffler, and once that baby gets warmed up.............super schweet! i highly recommend a borla muffler just because its unique and doesnt sound anything like an import should. totally aggressive.
im getting an uppipe installed, and possibly a helix downpipe down the line, so 3cats -3 cats = mega loud
altho, i am contemplating just a 1 cat deleting downpipe. i will probably want to hold onto a cat.

cuz it is. Its mean, intimidating. Ever listen to a Porche they sound mean and raspy. I followed one to work the other day. I wept openly once i parked it was beutiful.
P.S.
I was joking about the weeping part.. I dont cry....unless i hurt myself...sometimes.

they sound like that because the cylinders on the right side fire almost at the same time. then the cylinders on the left side fire almost at the same time. So it goes left right left right left right.
The firing order goes 1 and 4 ,2 and 3. Something like that. go to rallispec .com and look at the crank.

When you drop the STi tranny and engine mounts, you'll feel your car tight. Even when you first start it up you'll feel the difference. All that loose play in the engine when you WOT and shift will be gone. The engine noise inside the cabin will be louder and the vibrations will be distinguishable. Then you'll hear if you have any loose trim in the interior.
I highly recommended it, if you like the sports feel on a car. Beware, family and g/f may not appreciate it since the car will feel rough, somewhat like a WRC car. ( Not that I've driven one )

Rough idle
On the original post about a rough idle, it is not necessarily a characteristic of a boxer engine. I've had an 01 Boxster for the past 1 1/2 years. It idles like a Rolex. A long time ago I had a 68 911S. It idled like a cement mixer. Both have 6 cylinder boxer engines.

Hey you have to realize the different cars u just mentioned. a 68 vs 01 Porshe. technology has changed alot during the years along with the ways to insoulate the harsh sounds. The Boxter is pretty expensive compared to the WRX and there for has some better technology in it. So you may not experence the same harshness in the Boxter vs the Wrx or even the 68 911s.
