What is bhp

bhp...
equals
"Brake Horse Power." The amount of braking force that the engine can supply when coming to a halt.
Correct me if I am wrong.

--EDIT -- Oops, it was supposed to be "braking" --made the change.

I also have...
another question about this...while the thread is here...
When people add stage 0+ kits to their cars, it increases horsepower to the wheels...i.e. a stock WRX has about 161-175 WHP...but when people add staged kits to their vehicles...how does this affect BHP? I figure it's more HP than what is being put to the wheels, but how much?
So, if a stage 1 kit produces (for example) 200 WHP, what does this translate into BHP? I would assume it's quite a significant change, but how is it affected? Does it affect overall braking distances/braking power/braking feel?
Any info. would be great.

The Horse Power of an engine is usually expressed as Brake Horse Power which is a measure of power delivered at the crank and available to do work for the operator. Occasionally the term Indicated Horse Power may come up, this is the theoretical amount of power produced by the engine based on cylinder size and amount of fuel burned. An engine consumes a certain amount of the power it produces to carry it through to the cycle to the next point of power production. If the Indicated Horse Power of an engine is 10 HP, and it takes 3 HP to drive the engine itself then the Brake Horse Power is 7 HP.
Its just a term, bhp actually has nothing to do with the stopping distance of you car. Brakes work off of a hydraulic system.
