used subie good bets
hello,
i'm trying to help my friend pick out a quality used car that is just a few years old, reliable, and automatic.
i've recommended to her the typical choices: civics, toyotas, and subarus. she's not an enthusiast driver, so i think she'd be quite happy with a civic. but, she would appreciate the AWD in winter here, and a solid feeling chassis, etc, like the subaru would offer. oh yeah, right now she's driving a s*turn...
anyway, with her ~$10K price cap in mind, it looks like she can shoot for legacys and outback wagons in the 97-00ish range with reasonable mileage. in particular, the Legacy gets 'used car best bet' awards for some years on edmunds.com.
so, can anyone recommend any great years/models, or cars to watch out for? eg, "1998 legacy automatic's had a lot of problems but manual trans was fine.." etc, or
thanks!

nah, just get whatever is clean, and working. She'll be fine if she takes car of it mechanically (oil changes, etc...)
4EAT is one tranny that won't be breaking or anything. I would suggest an Outback Sport wagon personally. They just rock!
Oh, and try to get a car with a 2.2 or 2.5 liter engine. She might find the 1.8 too weak.

I don't know if the Legacy 2.5GT comes in auto, but that is one sexy car. I'd get one of those, based on your criteria, but I prefer the sedan look to a wagon. If she doesn't care, and needs the utility, the outback wagon is awesome. A friend of mine has one and it's got around 100k mi on it and it's in perfect shape.

I'd say like a an Outback Sport(pre 97-00 most likely given her budget) would be great for her. Despite being a "wagon" the OBS is pretty small but still has the utility of the full size outback. In reality though, pretty much any recent Subaru she can find in the price ranger will suit her well.
