Thinking about a WRX.....
I currently have a 97 cobra which I've owned for just over 2 years and I drive a Ford ranger everyday to keep the milage off of it. However since i've moved off to college i've realized that I don't have time or the money to have a hotrod and I'm keeping it 15 min away in a barn. I'm looking for something that I can modify the way it looks and maybe alittle about the way it runs with out loosing my warentee or risking damage. I'll be driving it 360 days a year and I like the awd for the snow.
Is the WRX the way to go???
Would you buy a used wrx or only a new one (i'm new to turbos but I'm worried that someone broke it in wrong)
Is the new body style better, did they change anything important??
How reliable is this car going to be (oil will be changed and it'll be driven easy however it will see redline a few times per day.)
Do they take 91 octain and does it come with full synthetic in the motor if not should I switch it as soon as it rolls of the trailer or leave dino oil in it to help the break in period. Again I don't know anything about the turbo.
Any additional info would be great.
Thanks guys
Jerad

I'm just scared I can really beat the **** out of this cobra and it's still runs like it's bran new and doesn't burn a drop of oil. it sounds like a few 4000 rpm launches with the wrx and i'll have no clutch or tranny.
is this true?? I would only drop it 2-4 time a month, but I don't want it going out. I've had the same clutch in the cobra 50,000 miles and dumped it plenty, plus it's not a 100 shot of nos and I have never had a problem.
So whats the wrx deal???

The tranny isnt weak itself. Its just the weakest link. Believe me, its plenty fast without dropping the clutch. Youve got awd so you dont need to launch as hard as the cobra cause you arent gonna get wheel spin. By the way, nice ride. I wish I still had my 71 mach1. That was my first fun car I bought when in highschool like 8 years ago. I want another one badly. Anyways, when buying, avoid high milage or heavily modded cars cause they are magnets for abuse. If you find a car stock with 3-9k on the odometer I would imagine your relativly safe. As far as switching to synth, I would wait until after break-in. The dino oils got stuff in it the engine needs at the early life. They definitly need 91+ octane, I think they run better on 93. And as far as redlining, once youve broken it in they beg to be driven hard.

I really appreciate the help guys, The only other car I'm considering is a Celica but i don't think it has the room, motor, or traction to suit my needs.
ok a few more questions need answers:
what should I expect to pay for a 2004 WRX new with all the good fixins'?? Keep in mind I live in missouri and cars don't ever sell above sticker.
Another question is this, I'm a good driver, now I don't know how I'll handle the AWD but the factory 1/4 of 14.1 will i be able to acheive it without blowing my tranny and clutch to pieces?? or where they redline dumping it??
Thanks guys all info is great i"m about to go test drive one I'll get pictures.

It won't let go in corners like my Mustang used to! I've never ended up pointed the wrong direction in another car like I did in that car.
So overall: the WRX is way fun, but very different. Just keep that in mind.

Thanks for all the answers man, I'm really sorry you've had trouble with your mustang, mine is a killer and has ran flawlessly since the day I drove it off the showroom floor (yea it was used but it was on the showroom floor). Anyhow I went to test drive the WRX today and I really like it, infact I like it alot, it's alittle different and you can really feel the boost kick in. However I'm still alittle scared about the way they look, 4-doors it's really what I need just not what I want. If I can bring myself to getting rid of the cobra I'll go with the WRX. That is if I can afford it, they want a 28 for one with sun roof.

Most of my Mustang's problems came once it got a little older, but about the age of yours. The biggest pain was the carburetor which needed almost constant work -- that's not a problem any more, and it tells you how long ago I drove a Mustang! But my familly drives mostly Fords -- they have gotten better, but the Mustang still falls below average reliability according to Consumer Reports, the Subarus fair better.
28 sounds like way too much -- most people don't pay more than a few hundred over invoice, many have paid exactly invoice. WRXs are everywhere, there's no shortage.
Check these places for invoice:
http://www.edmunds.com
http://www.kbb.com
http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/wrxsti2004.html
Try getting an internet quote from them, or just offer invoice and see where they go.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I also want to know more about what the WRX clutch/tranny can actually handle. I'm actually looking into getting an '04 WRX as well, and I've read the horror stories too.
I think the clutch shudder was fixed by the time the '03-'04 came out, but that still leaves the case flex thing.
I'll still probably get one anyways though

I own both a 1998 Cobra like yours (except mine's black) and I have a 2003 Sonic Blue Cobra. From the picture you posted of your car, if you would put a wing like that on a Cobra, then perhaps you should get the dodge neon SRT-4. Sell your V8 and go get some rice somewhere.
My wife is getting a WRX, and I think she will love it. I expect it to be a fun car for the both of us. From your posts, however, I can predict a lot of broken parts in your future if you get one. Be prepared to dish out the coin.
