Subaru Sports Car?
Hi,
Why hasn't Subaru built a sports car?
No, I don't mean the WRX or SVX-- I mean a REAL sports car: 2 seats,
convertible top, Italian body. Yeah, I know, buy a Honda S2000 or a
BMW 321iX.
Has Fuji considered all the old guys with mid-life crisis (and young,
crazy guys) who NEED a sports car? I never got to buy that MGB back in
1970, and a restored, thirty year old Brit car is NOT all that fun.
And, let's face it, a STATION WAGON (even a WRX wagon) IS NOT COOL.
Hell, my MOM drove a station wagon! (And that '64 Pontiac had more
horsepower than any Subie ever built, though it handled like a pig).
Anybody else have any thoughts? (Actually, my fantasy is to buy a
wrecked WRX, and weld-on a Miata body).
Best wishes,
Jeff,

My dad asked me the same exact question a few days ago when we were discussing the Vancouver WRX police car, and my response was that a roadster really wouln't fit in with their sport-and-utility style. I think some people would disagree that wagons aren't cool, though.

I do agree with Cabal though. It just doesn't fit with Subaru's image. If you want an AWD sports car get a Porsche or a BMW.

Subaru's image? A sedan that goes over 150 mph, runs in rallies
against other 300 hp monster cars, and has a turbo motor... heck,
THAT sounds more like a Porsche than a Porsche!!!
I mean, before the WRX, Subies were seens as "little old lady cars":
Slow, reliable, but NOT exciting. You bought a Beemer 3 series for fun
and speed, a Subie for basic transportation.
I remember the first time I saw a Subaru-- 1977-- it was ugly, slow,
and front wheel drive (remember, this was before "the beauty of all
wheel drive"?). And who can forget the Subaru 360?
So, hey, if Fuji can build world-class racing/rally cars (and Porsche can
build an SUV!), why not a sports car?
Oh, and let's not forget: price of Porsche= $75,000, price of Beemer
equals $45,000, price of Subaru= $25,000.
